Listening to Sienna's hysterical sobbing through the phone, Seraphina's heart skipped a beat.
She hadn't expected Nora to be so ruthless as to actually drag Sienna to court.
Suppressing the rising unease in her chest, she softened her voice, continuing to play the role of the gentle, understanding confidante.
"That can't be right. You two have been friends for so many years, how could she be that cruel? Calm down, she's definitely just trying to scare you into paying her back. Sienna, there's no need to butt heads with her. If push comes to shove, just pay back the money first."
Sienna was crying so hard her words were breaking up over the line, almost incomprehensible.
"I don't have the money! That half a million dollars went down the drain! I can barely even afford rent right now. Please help me, Seraphina! You're rich. Just lend me some cash to tide me over, and I swear I'll pay you back as soon as I can. I swear it!"
Seraphina let out a troubled sigh, her tone brimming with sincere apology and helplessness. "I told you before, I don't control my own money. Finn keeps a very tight leash on it. He questions every single large expense, demanding to know exactly where it's going. I simply don't have that kind of cash on hand right now."
At this point, Sienna didn't care anymore. Any illusion of sisterhood or promises of future repayment were completely crushed by the sheer terror of being driven to a dead end.
She suddenly snapped, throwing all caution to the wind. "Seraphina Shaw, if you don't lend me that money, I'll expose all your secrets! I'll tell Nora everything! Do you really think you can keep Finnegan Fletcher wrapped around your finger forever? Does Finnegan actually love you from the bottom of his heart? He and Nora were together for five years. Doesn't that worry you?!"
Seraphina took a deep breath, shoving all her vicious, murderous intent deep down into her chest. When she finally spoke, her voice remained gentle, laced with a hint of hurt.
"Sienna, why are you doing this? I know better than anyone whether Finn still cares for Nora. Threatening me like this will only destroy our friendship. I genuinely wanted to help you. I even scraped together some of my own personal savings to help you cover the deficit, but what you just said... it really breaks my heart."
Hearing this, Sienna immediately panicked. The reckless bravado from moments ago vanished instantly. She profusely apologized into the receiver, her voice dropping to a groveling, almost sycophantic pitch.
"I'm so sorry, Seraphina! It's all my fault. Nora drove me crazy, and I just lashed out. Please help me! I'll never say anything like that again, I swear! I promise I'll take this secret to my grave. No one will ever know! If I breathe a word of it, let me rot in hell!"
