Finnegan was rushed into the operating room.
The fluorescent lights in the hospital corridor were blindingly bright. Nora sat on the bench, her hands clasped tightly over her knees, her fingertips freezing cold.
Her mind was an absolute mess. She never could have anticipated that Finnegan would take a hit like that for her.
But that didn't mean she was just going to forgive him for everything he had done. Gratitude and forgiveness were two entirely different things, and she drew a very clear line between them.
Felix stood beside her, staring down at her expression, his brows knitting together in a tight frown.
He knew her too well. She looked tough on the outside, but underneath, she was incredibly soft-hearted. A hundred cruel acts would fade from her memory, but one act of kindness? She would remember it for a lifetime.
He sat down on the chair next to her, lowering his voice as he carefully probed, "Nora, you haven't gone soft, have you? He's done so many unforgivable things to you. You can't let him buy you off with a little scratch."
Nora shook her head, her tone resolute. "I haven't gone soft. I'm just struggling to believe it. He's always been entirely devoted to Seraphina. Why would he take a hit like that for me?"
Felix leaned back against his chair, pondering for a second before scoffing dismissively. "Maybe his conscience suddenly woke up, who knows? Either way, don't let him fool you. He took a hit from a chandelier, not a bullet. You should still hate him just as much."
Nora let out a small, tired laugh at his phrasing, but the smile quickly vanished.
"Don't worry, I won't." She had fought so hard to claw her way out of that toxic relationship and get her life back on track. There was no way she was jumping back into the fire over one protective reflex. Her mind wasn't that clouded.
Nora blinked, instinctively waving her hand dismissively. "No, it's fine. I was just a little startled, it's nothing serious."
But Xander showed absolutely no sign of retracting his demand. His expression abruptly hardened, silently making it clear that he wasn't leaving this hospital until she got checked.
Unable to withstand the weight of his stare, Nora finally relented and followed a nurse to the emergency room for a full set of basic checkups.
The results came back perfectly normal. By the time she walked out with the medical report in hand, Xander was still standing in the corridor waiting for her.
He was leaning against the wall, but at the sound of her footsteps, he looked up. Nora turned the report toward him with a faint smile. "See? Perfectly fine. All my vitals are normal."
