I Was His Wife, Then His Widow, Then No One's But My Own novel Chapter 261

Seraphina Shaw sat by the bed, holding a warm washcloth, gently wiping Finnegan Fletcher's face.

Her movements were soft, but her voice carried a lingering resentment, sounding like she was either talking to herself or deliberately making sure he heard.

"You got hurt all because of Nora. If you hadn't taken that hit for her, she would be the one lying here right now. You suffered so much for her, and look at what she did. She didn't even say a single soft word, just stood there looking cold, like it was perfectly natural for you to save her. You should really confront her so she knows she owes you her life."

Finnegan kept his eyes closed and didn't respond. He didn't want to hear this right now. The wound on his back was still throbbing with pain, and the burning sensation left after the anesthesia wore off left him in a state of extreme exhaustion.

He didn't want to talk, nor did he want to keep hearing Seraphina whispering in his ear about how terrible Nora was.

Seeing his silence, the dark fire in Seraphina's heart flared up again.

She slammed the washcloth onto the nightstand, raising her voice half a pitch. The grievance and dissatisfaction in her tone completely overshadowed her earlier gentleness.

"What's that supposed to mean? Why aren't you saying anything? Do you honestly disagree with me and think Nora is the best? If that's the case, Finnegan, then you should hurry back to her. Why am I even still here? Am I just an eyesore to you two?"

Finnegan opened his eyes. Those irises, which had been clouded by pain, suddenly became incredibly sharp and clear in that moment.

Instead of coaxing her like he usually did, he looked straight into her eyes and asked a question that caught her completely off guard. "Do you know how the accident at the venue suddenly happened?"

Seraphina hadn't expected him to abruptly change the subject to this. She froze, and the words tumbled out of her mouth almost as a reflex. "I... how would I know? I wasn't even there."

All the blood in Seraphina's body seemed to run backward in that instant, and she stiffened from head to toe.

Was he tricking her into a confession?

She turned around to look at him in disbelief, her eyes reddening. The tremor in her voice this time was real, a twisted mix of fear and a guilty conscience.

"Finnegan, what are you implying? Are you trying to trick me? You actually think I would do something like that, don't you? In your heart, I'm just that kind of person, that vicious!"

She choked on a sob. Biting her lip hard, she gritted out, "I just heard about it. I heard people talking at the entrance of the press conference. It's not like those people don't have mouths. With such a huge incident, how could they not discuss it? How could I not know!"
