"Don't you agree, Ms. Shaw? You really ought to think very carefully about whether your fiancé has made any vicious enemies recently. To orchestrate such a catastrophic sabotage at a public signing ceremony... I'd imagine the perpetrator is someone truly vile."
Seraphina's face drained of all remaining color. Her lips parted, desperately trying to formulate a comeback, but her throat clamped shut. She couldn't force a single syllable out.
*Does he know something? Did he figure out Sienna's involvement? Or worse—is he onto me too?*
Too terrified to maintain the standoff with Xander, she let out a shaky scoff, abruptly turned on her heel, pushed open the door to the VIP room, and practically fled inside.
Inside, Finnegan was slowly regaining consciousness.
He lay flat on his stomach, the anesthesia still clinging to his system, leaving his mind drifting somewhere between agonizing clarity and heavy fog.
Hearing the door swing open, he forced his heavy eyelids open. The very first words out of his mouth were, "Where's Nora? Is she okay? Was she hurt?"
Nora had followed Seraphina into the room. Upon hearing his desperate questions, her expression remained entirely unchanged. She stood there, completely unfazed.
"I am uninjured. Thank you, Mr. Fletcher."
Seraphina's eyes immediately flooded with red. She threw herself against the edge of Finnegan's bed, desperately clutching his un-IVed hand, her voice a shrill mix of sobs and fury.
"Frederick, are you out of your mind?! Do you just have absolutely no regard for your own life?! What about me?! If something horrible happened to you, what would I do?!"
Seeing Seraphina crying so hysterically, a weak, comforting smile surfaced on Finnegan's pale face.
He weakly reached up and brushed the tears from her cheek, his tone dropping to that familiar, gentle cadence he always used to coax her. "Alright, shh, stop crying. I'm fine, aren't I? You're crying like I'm already dead. The doctors said it's just superficial injuries. A few days of rest and I'll be perfectly fine."
Finnegan's eyes flashed with stark disbelief.
He had taken a near-fatal blow to protect her, yet there was absolutely no warmth, no gratitude, and no heartache in her eyes. Instead, she was using this frigid, purely transactional business offer to cancel out what he did.
She wanted to repay him by letting Seraphina into the project. She wanted to clear the debt. She wanted to erase any ties between them completely.
Finnegan couldn't form a single word before Nora simply turned on her heel and walked out the door, never once looking back at him.
Seraphina scoffed coldly. "Who does she think she is? I don't need her permission to join a project! I'll join if I want to, and I won't if I don't."
Finnegan remained entirely silent, slowly closing his eyes in defeat.
