The rental was on the top floor of an old residential building on the outskirts of the city, where most of the voice-activated lights in the hallway were broken.
Sienna didn't even dare stay in the hospital. She was afraid Nora would find her, and even more afraid the police would find her, but Nora came anyway.
When she pushed the door open, Sienna was curled up on the bed, her hair a disheveled mess.
She was still wearing the same jacket from the day of the press conference. Unwashed for days, the collar and cuffs were stained black with grime.
The moment she saw Nora standing in the doorway, she jerked up from the bed and shrank into the corner against the wall, her hands waving wildly in front of her.
Nora stood at the door, looking at the person on the bed who used to be her best friend.
On the way over, she had thought of many different ways to start the conversation, but standing here now, she realized all those interrogations and accusations were unnecessary.
She just looked at Sienna with a flat gaze. "Sienna, how have I ever offended you? I've treated you well, even willing to lend you money under those circumstances. And you? Time and time again, you pushed your luck until I was forced to take action against you."
Sienna glared at her fiercely without saying a word.
It wasn't because she didn't want to speak, but because she couldn't.
Her lips parted several times, but only garbled, hoarse whimpers tore from her throat.
Nora took a step forward. "Why aren't you speaking? If you think I'm wrong, refute me. I turned a blind eye when you palled around with Seraphina, but why did you have to hurt me over and over again? Sienna, I really just don't get it."
No matter how calm Nora tried to be, she couldn't help shedding tears at this point.
The feeling of being stabbed in the back by the person closest to her was truly unbearable.
Nora pulled her phone back, her voice calm. "If I wanted to hurt you, why would I do it so blatantly? You were used by someone with an ulterior motive. As for who that person is, you know better than I do."
Deep down, Nora already knew that no matter how much Sienna hated her, she didn't have the subjective willpower to actively harm her.
She was easily swayed and gullible, but she lacked the guts to initiate harm.
Someone must have been instigating her from behind the scenes, but that didn't mean she would forgive Sienna.
She stood up, took out her phone, and dialed emergency services. Then she looked down at Sienna huddled in the corner of the bed, her tone returning to the calmness she had when she arrived.
"I've called the cops. The police will be here right away. Whatever you have to say, tell it to them."
