"From the very first time I saw you at the station, you protected me so fiercely. I just knew that being your daughter would be the best thing in the world."
"I never even dared to dream I could actually be your daughter." Bonnie's eyes grew glossy as she spoke, unshed tears welling up.
Nora's heart ached as she pulled the little girl into a tight embrace. She had nearly suffered severe hemorrhaging when she gave birth to Cassie and almost didn't make it. The only reason she held on was because she couldn't bear the thought of her daughter growing up without a mother.
Hearing that Bonnie had endured such a tragic past made her heart break even more.
"Don't worry, Bonnie. I promise I will always treat you well."
Bonnie clung to Nora tightly, looking up with bright, hopeful eyes. "Can I call you Mom?"
Nora's chest tightened with emotion, her voice softening. "Of course you can."
Bonnie buried her face in Nora's embrace and whispered so quietly, "Mom."
A warm, profound wave of affection swept through Nora's chest, laced with a twinge of heartbreak.
Bonnie was so incredibly cautious, even when just calling her Mom.
"You can call me that as loud and as proud as you want, Bonnie. I'll always protect you."
Bonnie squeezed her tight, unable to hold back anymore, and sniffled. Nora felt a small damp patch forming on her shirt. She paused for a moment, then gently patted the back of Bonnie's head.
She didn't know exactly when Bonnie fell asleep. Gently, Nora withdrew her hand, tucked the blankets securely around her, and slipped out of the room. The rain outside had picked up again, pounding even harder against the glass than when she arrived.
Nora walked into the living room and found Xander standing by the floor-to-ceiling windows, gazing out at the storm. The warm amber lighting cast a glow over him, making his broad-shouldered silhouette look even more imposing.
She called out softly, "Xander?"
He turned around, his gaze shifting to her with a look of indulgent warmth. "Is Bonnie asleep?"
Nora nodded. "Yeah. I should get going."
