Sorrow brimmed in Felix's eyes. "That's exactly why Nora made up her mind to remarry. I'm telling you this secret so you can see the entire chessboard clearly and protect her properly."
A heavy weight settled over Xander's chest. "I understand. I will," he said solemnly.
Meanwhile, Nora walked back into the institute. As soon as she stepped into her office, she spotted Zelda Vance packing her belongings. Taken aback, she hurried over. "Mrs. Vance, what are you doing back here? Has Professor Vance's condition stabilized?"
A warm, maternal smile spread across Zelda's face as she patted Nora's hand. "His condition is stable now, so I don't need to stay glued to the hospital. You've been quite busy these past few days, and your professor won't stop talking about you."
Nora smiled softly. "I'll go visit him right after work."
Zelda suddenly shifted the conversation. "Nora, I can see that Felix's feelings for you go far beyond the ordinary. That boy's eyes are entirely fixed on you. Everyone around you can see it plain as day. You might be the only one still in the dark."
Nora's heart skipped a beat at the mention of it. Truthfully, she had sensed Felix's affection.
But she had never felt that kind of spark for him.
Meeting Zelda's gaze openly, Nora spoke without a shred of hesitation. "Mrs. Vance, Felix is my lifelong benefactor and the best senior colleague I could ever ask for. I respect him, and I am deeply grateful to him. But I can't force romantic feelings. In my heart, we share a bond forged through our work and the affection of family. There will never be anything more between us."
Seeing the resolute certainty in Nora's eyes, Zelda thought of how long Felix had quietly stood by her side and sighed softly.
"I understand. I'll have a good talk with him later, and hopefully help him let go of this obsession."
Nora felt a pang of guilt. She didn't want things to turn sour between her and Felix. They weren't just colleagues; they were comrades sharing the trenches.
