I Was His Wife, Then His Widow, Then No One's But My Own novel Chapter 363

After settling the two little girls into bed, Nora picked up a fairy tale book from the nightstand and softly read a bedtime story.

Bonnie obediently leaned against Nora's arm, completely engross out in the tale. Cassie pressed against her other side, quietly behaving herself without any more tantrums. Every now and then, she would peek at Nora's profile, her gaze growing soft and gentle.

The soothing, melodic voice filled the room. The children's eyelids grew heavy, their breathing slowly evening out as they fell into a deep sleep.

Nora finally closed the storybook. Just as she was about to lie down, her phone buzzed softly on the nightstand. She picked it up and saw Xander's name on the screen.

Afraid of waking the children, she slipped out of bed quietly, slid open the glass door to the balcony, and sat down outside, pulling a coat over her shoulders.

She answered the call. Xander's deep, magnetic voice came through the receiver. It carried a hint of exhaustion, yet remained undeniably tender.

"Not asleep yet?"

Nora settled into the chair, gazing out at the heavy moonlight. A slow smile curved her lips. "The kids just fell asleep. Why are you calling this late?"

A low, raspy chuckle sounded from the other end. "Worried about me?"

Nora paused, then cut straight to the question lingering in her mind. "The roadblocks with Finnegan's project... was that your doing?"

Xander didn't confirm it immediately. Instead, he let out a lazy, effortless laugh. "Looks like my little parlor tricks couldn't stay hidden from you."

Nora's heart softened, a warm current flowing through her chest.
