I Was His Wife, Then His Widow, Then No One's But My Own novel Chapter 364

Nora paused. "How did you know I was on the balcony?"

Xander chuckled. "I can hear the wind on your end."

Nora was momentarily stunned by the man's keen attention to detail. Then she said, "Okay, I got it."

She hung up the phone, a faint, lingering warmth settling over her heart. Slipping the phone into her pocket, she quietly stepped back inside. Careful not to wake the children, she went to the adjacent guest room and slipped into bed, sleeping soundly through the night.

Early the next morning, as the first light of dawn broke, Nora got up to make breakfast for the girls.

While she was busy in the kitchen, a soft padding of footsteps approached from behind. Bonnie, rubbing her sleep-filled eyes, had wandered downstairs. She trotted into the kitchen and obediently tugged at Nora's shirt. "I'll help you."

Nora was a bit surprised. "Why are you up so early, Bonnie? Cassie is still asleep."

Bonnie grabbed a stack of bowls and silverware and carried them to the dining table. "I couldn't sleep without you next to me."

Nora smiled tenderly. She ruffled the top of Bonnie's head and let the little girl assist with setting the table. "Careful, Bonnie."

There was still no movement from upstairs, and breakfast was completely ready. Cassie was clearly still lounging in bed. Nora instructed Bonnie to wait downstairs, then headed up to wake Cassie for breakfast.

When she reached the bedroom, the door was slightly ajar. Just as she raised her hand to knock, she heard Cassie's voice drifting from inside.

"Seraphina! You finally called me. I was so scared all alone in the house last night. Luckily, Mom came and got me."

Seraphina's voice drifted through the receiver. "Cassie, your mom took you in? But she has Bonnie with her. She's going to scold you in front of everyone."

Cassie hesitated when she heard that. Recalling what happened the night before, she realized Seraphina wasn't entirely wrong.
