I Was His Wife, Then His Widow, Then No One's But My Own novel Chapter 379

Zelda Vance sat at her desk, a stack of files spread before her, her brow furrowed with deep concern.

Seeing Nora Newman enter, she immediately stood up, walking around the desk to grab her hands. "The crowd outside is gone. What about those two?"

Nora sighed and sat down on the sofa. The tension that had kept her shoulders rigid all morning finally began to ease. "They left."

Leaning back against the cushions, she closed her eyes, her voice betraying an exhaustion she couldn't suppress. "Zelda, was I too impulsive? Did I give them an opening to attack me?"

Zelda scoffed, clearly dissatisfied with that conclusion. "You just took Bonnie out for a meal, and someone secretly photographed you, posting it online with a bunch of fabricated accusations. You didn't even go out of your way to justify yourself or retaliate. How is that being impulsive?"

Nora opened her eyes and stared at the ceiling, her voice so soft it sounded like she was talking to herself. "I meant... kicking both of them out."

Zelda fell silent for a moment before gently patting the back of her hand. "That's because you knew deep down that they weren't standing there today to help you solve your problem. They were there for themselves. One was driven by guilt, the other by protective pity, but neither of them was truly looking at the situation from your perspective."

Nora turned her head, a flicker of surprise in her eyes. She hadn't expected Zelda to read her mind so perfectly.

It was exactly how she felt. Listening to those two men argue endlessly in front of her had only made her irritated.
