I Was His Wife, Then His Widow, Then No One's But My Own novel Chapter 409

Half a month later, Nora Newman was almost fully healed and finally ready to be discharged. While checking her incisions, the doctor noted that her recovery had exceeded expectations. "No heavy lifting or strenuous exercise for the next month. Make sure to come back regularly for your physical therapy and checkups."

Nora agreed to everything, but her mind was already calculating her lab work. She still needed to finalize Annabel Atkins's clinical trial plan. Even though she had been working from her hospital bed for the past two weeks, it wasn't the same as being in the office, and she had a lot of catching up to do.

Xander Harrison soon arrived to pick her up. He carefully gathered the miscellaneous items she had accumulated during her stay and packed them into a suitcase.

Nora sat on the edge of the bed, watching him bustle around the room. A soft smile touched her lips. The scene felt like a preview of their married life, and she could easily picture their future together.

"Xander, watching you pack makes me think about our future."

He paused, the corner of his mouth curving upward, though his hands didn't stop. "Is that so? Then you should think about it a little more."

Nora chuckled and shook her head. Gazing out the window, a surreal feeling suddenly washed over her.

She had been confined to this bed for half a month. At first, the pain had been so excruciating that she couldn't sleep, making every passing second feel like torture.

But looking back now, it had all become a cherished part of her memories with Xander.

As she slipped off the bed, Xander grabbed the suitcase with one hand and took hers with the other. He looked at her with gentle eyes. "Let's go."

Nora nodded, giving his hand a reassuring squeeze as they walked out of the hospital room together.

The sun was shining brightly outside. Xander stowed her luggage in the trunk, opened the passenger door for her, and waited until she was seated. Then, he leaned in to buckle her seatbelt. His movements were incredibly smooth, as if he had done this a million times before. Only then did he circle around to the driver's seat.

Once the car started moving, Nora realized they were heading in the wrong direction. "This isn't the way home, is it?"
