Nora knelt there, her eyes curved in a warm smile, arms open and waiting.
Bonnie froze for a split second before launching herself into Nora's embrace. Carefully avoiding her injured shoulder, the little girl wrapped her arms tightly around Nora's neck and called out in her sweet, clear voice, "Mom!"
Nora's eyes instantly filled with tears. She held Bonnie tightly against her chest, resting her chin on top of the little girl's head as silent tears slipped into her soft hair.
She had never imagined that she would hear the most beautiful word in the world from a child she shared no blood with, especially in a moment like this.
Standing beside them, Xander watched the scene unfold, his eyes filled with profound tenderness and emotion.
Bonnie pulled back, looking at Nora with tear-streaked cheeks, and declared with total seriousness, "Mom, I'm going to protect you from now on. I won't let anyone ever bully you again."
Nora couldn't help but laugh through her tears. She kissed Bonnie's forehead and said softly, "Okay. From now on, Mom will protect you, and you will protect Mom."
Bonnie held up her pinky finger. "Pinky promise."
Nora hooked her pinky around Bonnie's, sealing the promise. Bonnie finally broke into a radiant smile. She ran over to Xander, tilted her little face up, and crossed her arms like a miniature boss. "Dad, you are not allowed to hide things like this from me ever again. Mom's business is my business, got it?"
Xander crouched down slowly and gave his daughter a solemn nod. "Understood. It was Dad's fault. It won't happen again."
Satisfied, Bonnie nodded and rushed back to Nora's side, nuzzling against her hand like an affectionate kitten who couldn't get enough attention.
That evening, Xander personally cooked an entire feast to celebrate the new lady of the house. Sitting at the dining table, Nora took it all in, still feeling like she was in a beautiful dream.
After dinner, Nora tucked Bonnie into bed and returned to the master bedroom. Xander slowly approached her. Maintaining his perfect sense of boundaries, he presented a small, luxurious velvet box.
Nora blinked in surprise. "What's this?"
