Finnegan sat frozen at his desk for a long time, gripping the phone. The cold electronic voice echoed in his ears, and a suffocating wave of despair gripped his heart.
He slowly stood up, watching the sky outside darken. He had stood before these floor-to-ceiling windows countless times, looking down at the city, feeling like the world was in the palm of his hand. He used to think there would always be a light left on for him at home, and a woman always waiting for his return.
Now, for the first time, he realized the glittering city lights outside had absolutely nothing to do with him.
Unable to suppress his agonizing longing any longer, Finnegan snatched up his suit jacket and strode out of the office.
Liam bumped into him in the hallway and froze. "Mr. Fletcher, you still have documents to review. Where are you going?"
Finnegan shot him a dark, warning glare, and Liam immediately shut his mouth.
He had to find Nora. It didn't matter where she was or if she even wanted to see him—he couldn't hold back the urge to find her anymore.
By the time he walked out of the building, the sky had turned gloomy, and a fine, misty rain began to fall.
He drove straight to Xander's villa. After killing the engine, he stared through the windows. The house glowed with warm, yellow light, and he could vaguely see silhouettes moving inside.
He recognized Nora instantly. She was bending down, talking softly to two small figures.
Seeing this picture-perfect scene, his eyes burned with unshed tears.
That was his daughter, his wife. He was the one who was supposed to have this life, but now it was all ruined.
Finnegan gripped the steering wheel so tightly his knuckles turned white. A crushing pain seized his chest, making it hard to breathe.
Finally unable to take it anymore, he threw open the car door, marched up to the porch, and rang the doorbell.
