(Author’s POV)
"Myra, why did you suddenly stop? Did something happen to you?" Elio inquired, concerned.
She didn’t even hear his words and lashed out, shooting daggers in Alaric’s direction, "Why is Mr. Yates in a hospital? What did you do to him?"
Everyone was left stunned by her words, ’How the heck~ .... how did she know about that old man?’ Drey commented, confused, bewildered. Others had the same thought and reaction.
"Myra~ ... relax. I think there is some kind of misunderstanding," Brave tried to smooth things out.
"There. Is. No. Misunderstanding~ .... Did you not hear him? Ask your brother. He was just talking to someone, telling him to keep an eye on him," Myra spat with gritted teeth. She got up from bed and walked straight towards Alaric. Grabbing the collar of the lab coat, she muttered, "Answer me. What did you do to Mr. Yates, Alaric Everests?" The contempt in her voice was crystal clear.
Alaric was utterly shell-shocked. Instead of answering her, he queried, "How did you do that? How can you hear the mind link?
"What? The mind link?" Elio mumbled, his mouth agape, and so were others. "You can hear that as well?"
Myra ignored his question and asked, "Don’t shift the topic. And tell me what you really did to him? Why has the Yates come here? What is going on?"
"Myra~ ...." Brave kept a gentle yet firm hand on her shoulder. "You need to calm down and hear us."
"Calm down? For what?" Myra shrugged his hand off her immediately.
"Myra, please, listen to us. It’s nothing what you are thinking," Elio said.
"Okay, tell me, what is it then? I want to hear it~ ... from Alaric’s mouth," she spoke, her eyes narrowed, her hands folded.
Alaric kept a straight face, although his hands crumpled the bedsheet beneath him. Brave looked at him and shook his head, signalling him not to say anything that would blow things out of proportion.
After doing a thorough background check, they knew what Garry meant to Myra. He was, in a way, her saviour. When she wanted to escape Damona and didn’t know what to do, he had extended his hand and helped her and her family to get out of there. Because of him, she and her folks are living a good life in Esteria. He had set it all up for her. And not only that, when she was young, Garry, though stern, had been kind to her in his own way. He had been looking out for her.
And Alaric’s track record hasn’t been great with Myra. So after keeping all this in mind, Brave decided to conceal Garry’s truth.
"He was in a serious car accident. And his family has come to take him back to Damona," Alaric finally said.
"Ca~ ... car accident? When~ ... when did it happen?" Myra asked. Then a particular memory struck her. When she had gone to Yelena’s department building to search for her, a few of the students were talking about Yelena running out in the middle of the lecture while crying. ’So, that’s why she walked out in a hurry.’
"This afternoon, while he was on his way to the airport. Alaric happened to be passing by and witnessed the scene. He quickly took them to the hospital," Brave told her. He nodded, looking at Alaric, telling him to go along with his words.
Alaric didn’t utter anything more. He just looked away.
Myra backed away, her eyes trembling, her face burnt with raw embarrassment. She had completely misunderstood Alaric and jumped to a conclusion. She wanted to dig a hole right now and bury herself in it. With her head lowered, she mumbled words of apology, "I~ ... I~ I am~ .... sorry."
Alaric’s eyes darted and locked on her with pure shock and amazement. ’Did she~ ... did she really apologize to me just now, that too willingly?’ He thought, blinking at her.
