Amid the hum of conversations filling the grand ballroom, Johnny’s gaze settled firmly on Julia.
Even with her eyes cast downward, Julia could feel the weight of his stare locking onto her.
Before she could gather her thoughts or come up with any kind of response, a mocking smirk pulled at Johnny’s lips, and a sharp huff of laughter escaped him.
“Ms. Brown, if my memory serves me right, you are the exact same age as Maggie, aren’t you? When Maggie was only seventeen years old, she had already finished developing CUAP. To this very day, CUAP still forms Cole Corporation’s strongest technical moat, and no expert across the whole industry has ever managed to crack its core code.
She stepped back from her career for marriage and raising kids, sure. But less than two years after making her professional comeback, she has already delivered such extraordinary, industry-shifting achievements.”
The crowd had already fallen completely quiet the moment Johnny began to speak. Every guest held their breath, giving him their full attention.
Johnny paid no mind to the surrounding onlookers and kept pressing forward with his sharp rebuttal.
“What about you? From everything I can recall, within your professional field, you have achieved absolutely nothing up to this point.
You have never created any original, meaningful technical work of your own, have you?
We could set all of that aside if you like. Take those two or three academic papers Maggie published. Even without outside assistance, I’d wager you would struggle just to fully understand what those papers are talking about.
Compared to Maggie’s real-world skill set, doesn’t that make you thoroughly mediocre? So when I say Professor Nolan rejected your application as his student purely because your skill level fell far below his admission standards… am I actually wrong?”
Julia’s hands squeezed so tight her knuckles whitened, and all color drained right out of her face.
Murmurs and quiet sighs rippled through the surrounding guests.
“So that’s how it really went down. Nolan turned her away simply because she wasn’t talented enough for his standards. But she convinced herself Maggie was secretly sabotaging her behind the scenes. She went around spreading rumors that Maggie got her position at Cole Corporation through underhanded tricks, and even claimed her research papers were fraudulent. Little did she know he was making herself the laughingstock of the whole room.”
