"We talked about it once," Brandon Jacobs said honestly, "but that was many years ago. You can’t possibly still be hung up on that, right?"
He didn’t understand what Elsa was so concerned about. Panicking, he raised a few fingers to swear an oath.
"If you don’t believe me, I’ll swear it. I work in the entertainment industry, so I deal with a lot of beautiful women every day. But I know exactly what kind of people they are and why they’re here, so I would never develop feelings for them. In all these years, I haven’t developed feelings for anyone..."
The more he tried to paint himself as pure and innocent, the colder Elsa’s gaze became.
"Damien is such a disappointment. He shouldn’t have sent you."
Brandon Jacobs was completely stunned. He reached for Elsa’s hand, but she pulled away.
Elsa’s aura was just too intimidating; he didn’t dare to force the issue.
"So what do you mean? Can you just be straight with me? I feel awful. We just did the most intimate thing two people can do, and now you’re dumping me? It feels like I’ve fallen from heaven straight into hell!"
Elsa pressed a hand to her forehead, speechless. ’This is exactly the kind of mess I was afraid of,’ she thought. And yet, here it was.
She took a moment to compose herself and gather her thoughts.
"I’m not going to be in the country for long. Besides, I’m a staunch believer in never getting married. I don’t want to get emotionally entangled with anyone. I don’t want to hurt anyone, and I don’t want to be hurt. So, I’m sorry. I don’t even know your name, but that’s not important. What’s important is... do you understand what I’m saying? All I want is a simple, purely physical..."
It dawned on Brandon Jacobs.
’No wonder she looked at me so indifferently when I dressed up for her today. No wonder she wanted to dump me. She’s dead set against marriage.’
At this point, Brandon Jacobs couldn’t blame anyone.
Damien Vaughn had warned him from the very beginning that this was just a game. He was the one who insisted on taking it seriously.
But understanding what Elsa meant didn’t make him feel any less miserable. He wanted to try and win her over.
"Elsa, I know a little about what you’ve been through, so I understand why you’re pessimistic about marriage, but..."
"No buts. Don’t try to convince me. I don’t want to discuss this with anyone. The more you say, the more I feel like we’re not on the same page. Your behavior tonight has seriously crossed a line for me. But you’re Damien’s good friend, so I won’t say any more. Please leave. If you keep this up, it’ll be harassment."
Elsa was not only cold but also impeccably logical, leaving no room for argument. Brandon Jacobs couldn’t sway her at all. He felt like he was going insane.
He’d finally gotten to see her, but it was still no use.
"No, no, no, Elsa, just let me finish."
Elsa wouldn’t listen. She had said her piece. With a cold SLAM, she shut the door.
Brandon Jacobs wanted to knock but didn’t dare. He paced anxiously in front of the door, wringing his hands.
Suddenly, a side window slid open, and Elsa’s face appeared.
"I’m sure you know who lives in this house. And I’m sure you know the consequences if her identity is exposed. If you act so recklessly again..."
Dejected, Brandon Jacobs drove back to the club.
Just as he reached the entrance, he ran into Wyatt Wynn, who was finally returning home.
Seeing him stumble out of the car reeking of alcohol, Wyatt Wynn couldn’t help but feel exasperated.
"Fuck, you’re this drunk and you still drove? Did you go see that woman? She rejected you again? Shit! Who the hell is she that you can’t let her go?"
"Come on, call her! Get her to come out! I’m dying to know what kind of goddess has you this wrapped around her finger."
