Chapter 362: Chapter 362 Hollow Victory

Elena’s POV

The valley feels hollow when Benedict’s forces disappear behind the ridge. This isn’t victory. This feels like a setup. I stand on the torn ground watching medics tend to the wounded while our mixed units regroup. Recovery means strength, and I won’t let this moment collapse into disorder just because blood was spilled.

"Report," I order, keeping my voice steady. The captains respond one by one, their voices strained but controlled.

"Northern breach has three wounded, all stable."

"Eastern flank took two hits, nothing serious."

"Northwood Ridge lost four, no casualties."

The damage was manageable. Not devastating. But it was deliberate.

Benedict didn’t come here to win today. He came to test us.

Malcom moves closer, his wolves falling into formation behind him with quiet precision. I can sense eyes watching us from every direction. Not challenging my authority, but measuring trust under visible tension.

"You understand his game now," Malcom says under his breath.

"I do."

"He waits for us to cluster together."

"Then hits when we’re packed tight."

He gives a single nod.

The bond thrums low and constant between us. Not blazing, not brittle, but acutely aware of how close we came to disaster.

I don’t release our defensive positions yet. We maintain formation until every injured fighter is evacuated and every perimeter line is rebuilt. Discipline after the fight matters as much as discipline during it.

Only after the valley empties and the third faction vanishes completely do I signal our withdrawal from forward positions. Our mixed units pull back in rotating waves. No rushing, no exposed backs. I stay at the clearing’s edge until the last of Malcom’s wolves settles into controlled perimeter positions.

"You return to supervised escort," I tell him evenly.

He doesn’t resist.

"Understood."

This isn’t forgiveness. This is temporary cooperation under a bigger threat.

We walk back toward the packhouse beneath a sky that feels heavier than before. Not from approaching storms, but from escalation that now has form and purpose.

Inside the command room, I don’t sit right away. I walk once around the map table before facing the assembled leadership.

"Benedict Graves is operational," I announce clearly. "He didn’t wander into this valley by accident. He targeted us."

Northwood Ridge’s Alpha folds his arms, his stance rigid.

"He waited for you and Malcom to compress forces," he states.

"Correct."

"Let you funnel relocation paths."

"Yes."

"Then struck when density peaked."

Exactly right.

"He’s not afraid of our alliance," Zora observes quietly. "He uses it against us."

"Right again."

The bond pulses faintly in agreement.

This has moved beyond Vane’s strategic assessments or Malcom’s pressure theories. This is territorial ambition rising from the shadows.

"Benedict has been rebuilding in secret," I continue. "He avoided direct contact because he wanted us fractured first."
