Elena’s POV
The second assault wave approaches.
"Hold compression," I command sharply.
We refuse to fracture.
We contract inward instead.
Benedict pulls back slightly, allowing his first wave to absorb our defensive pressure while his backup forces probe our outer boundaries.
He seeks weaknesses under mounting tension.
"Your united front limits your flexibility," he calls across the field.
"Our unity strengthens our foundation," I respond.
The bond thrums steady and unwavering.
He examines our formation, reassessing his strategy.
"You cannot sustain this defensive stance forever," he states.
"No," I acknowledge.
"Then you will break."
He makes a sharp motion, and his reserve force drives harder against our northern flank.
This has moved beyond mere posturing.
He escalates past simple messaging.
I pivot quickly toward Malcom.
"You anticipate his strategy," I state.
"Yes."
"He seeks to force us into overextension."
"Then we refuse it."
Malcom moves forward under careful watch, projecting his voice with measured command.
"Northern flank maintain position," he calls to our forces. "Do not advance."
His directive carries influence with several veteran fighters who served under his guidance, and their stance solidifies rather than wavering.
Benedict observes this.
His attention shifts briefly to Malcom.
"You choose the wrong leader," Benedict shouts toward him.
Malcom remains silent.
Wise.
Silence denies his manipulation.
The reserve assault falters under concentrated resistance, and one of Benedict’s wolves staggers into vulnerable terrain where Northwood Ridge fighters intercept efficiently.
Benedict withholds his retreat signal.
He waits.
He seeks a single error.
I advance deliberately, reducing the space between us.
"Your options diminish," I observe.
"Your time expires," he counters.
The sky grows darker as storm clouds gather, and the atmosphere feels electric in a way that promises approaching chaos, whether natural or manufactured.
"Time supports those who endure," I respond.
"It rewards those who dominate," he argues.
He signals again, and now a substantial force surges from the western boundary, not targeting me directly but angling toward the residential area beyond our training ground.
He changes objectives.
Civilian leverage.
The bond flares intensely for the first time, not with fear but with focused rage.
"Intercept," I shout.
Combined units wheel in coordinated movements, blocking the advance before it reaches residential proximity, and the engagement intensifies, becoming less precise but more forceful.
Benedict monitors the interception carefully.
"You cannot protect everything," he declares.
"We do not require it," I answer.
Because the residential zone was never undefended.
It possessed depth.
His forces collide with a reinforced secondary barrier they failed to detect, and for the first time, Benedict’s composure shows strain.
