My Stepbrother's Dirty Little Secret novel Chapter 505

Chapter 505

My throat burned. I stepped forward and she disappeared. My fingers closed around empty air. I pressed both hands against my chest, trying to hold onto something already leaving. The final notes echoed through the gardens.

I stood completely still.

One hand over my heart, the other hanging uselessly at my side.

The music ended.

Only the fountain kept moving. My breathing sounded too loud. I slowly lowered my arms.

Lucien hadn’t moved. He walked toward me without saying a word. His cane tapped softly against the marble.

He stopped only a few feet away, his eyes searched my face, then my hands, then my feet, “What is this called?”

My lips felt dry, “The Four Lives I Never Chose.”

He waited.

I looked across the gardens, “The first girl grows up afraid of her own home. The second mistakes a cage for love, “I swallowed, “The third finally finds someone worth loving… and never gets to keep him. And the last girl loses the only person who ever made her feel safe.”

Lucien looked toward the empty stage, “And which one are you?”

I stared at the marble beneath my feet, “My body remembers all four.”

For a long moment he said nothing then he stepped closer. His fingers lightly pushed my shoulder back, “You have beautiful technique but halfway through… you stopped dancing and started remembering. That’s good.”

I blinked.

He turned away, “The audience does not cry because the dancer cries, they cry because the dancer tells the truth. We begin again in ten minutes.”

For the first time since writing this routine…

The app read every paragraph aloud while highlighting each word one at a time. The font automatically changed into one my brain found easier to process. Long paragraphs broke themselves into smaller pieces. Important concepts appeared as diagrams instead of walls of text.

If I stumbled over a sentence, I could press one button and it would explain the idea using different words./

It felt less like reading, more like someone patiently walking beside me.

I was so grateful for it.

The soft voice read through the first chapter. I followed along, decision trees, model optimization, bias, overfitting, underfitting.

Halfway through the explanation, my own handwriting stared back at me from the margin.

I frowned, “What does that even say?”

I tilted the page, turned it sideways. It looked like a spider had fallen into ink and fought for its life. I squeezed my pen harder.

Around me, pages turned, keyboards clicked, someone laughed quietly, everyone else seemed to understand, everyone else seemed to move forward. I was still trapped on one sentence.
