Phoebe's gaze turned ice-cold.
This was the first time she had encountered an employee who dared to defy her to her face.
The tense expression on the woman's face looked exactly like that bitch Phoenix's, causing the suppressed anger in Phoebe's chest to instantly boil over and surge through her veins.
"I'm inspecting the departments to select elites and build a core team," Phoebe forced out a twisted smile, though her tone was piercing. "Does a regular employee like you have the right to question me? To question your direct superior?"
"Superior?" The woman shook her head, neither humble nor arrogant. "My direct superior is Phoenix, the marketing manager. And she is the only true heiress of the Prescott family."
That sentence stomped right on Phoebe's sore spot. Her pupils shrank, and her anger instantly washed away her reason. She raised her hand, aiming a vicious slap right at the woman's cheek.
However, before the slap could land, a slender hand shot out like an iron vise, firmly gripping Phoebe's wrist.
"Who is it?" Phoebe yelled, a mix of shock and rage.
She whipped her head around, only to lock eyes with a pair of deep, chilling irises.
Phoenix's cold, breathtakingly beautiful face was mere inches away. The intimidating, frosty aura radiating from her instantly extinguished half the raging fire in Phoebe's chest.
"Phoebe, you're throwing around quite the authority," Phoenix drawled lazily, her tone laced with bone-chilling coldness. "You just won over Alistair a little bit, and you couldn't wait to come strutting into other departments to snatch people away?"
A mocking smirk curled her lips. "Did you forget I'm the marketing manager?"
Phoebe struggled desperately, but the hand clamped around her wrist didn't budge an inch, as if it had taken root. She gritted her teeth. "Phoenix, Julian personally approved my selection of personnel from various departments! If you have a problem, go take it up with him!"
"Selecting people is fine. But—" Phoenix raised an eyebrow, her grip suddenly tightening. "You have to follow the rules."
With that, she violently flung Phoebe's hand away.
Phoebe stumbled back half a step. She looked down and saw a glaring red mark on her wrist.
"Follow the rules?" Phoebe rubbed her wrist, staring at her in suspicion and uncertainty, completely unaware of what this crazy woman was scheming now.
Phoenix slowly smoothed out her cuffs, her sharp gaze sweeping across the room. "I believe many of you here want to join this so-called new team to show off your skills. No problem. Please write up your transfer requests. You can only leave once I sign and approve them."
She paused, her gaze scraping across Phoebe's face like a blade. "And you, Phoebe. If you see someone you like, have them submit an application. Without my nod, you're not taking a single piece of paper out of the marketing department."
Once the eyesore was gone, Phoenix turned around and looked at the woman who had dared to stand up to Phoebe just moments ago. "What's your name?"
"M-Ms. Prescott, my name is Yolanda Young." The woman who had been so full of pride just seconds ago now looked flustered in front of her idol, a blush creeping up her cheeks.
Phoenix's lips curved into a faint smile, melting away the ice. She reached out and gently smoothed Yolanda's slightly messy collar. "You've got guts. From today on, you are my special assistant. You answer only to me."
"Huh?" Yolanda froze in place, her mind going completely blank. By the time she snapped back to reality, Phoenix's confident silhouette had already disappeared through the office door.
"Yolanda, congratulations!"
Her colleagues instantly swarmed her, their voices filled with envy.
"Promoted straight to the manager's special assistant! That's a massive leap!"
"Ugh, why didn't I have a backbone just now? If I had dared to talk back to that imposter, I might be the special assistant right now..."
Jumping from a low-level specialist to a manager's special assistant was a height many people struggled for half their lives to reach. More importantly, as long as she followed the right boss, if Phoenix rose higher in the future, Yolanda's future as her trusted confidante would be limitless.
