Being a high-paying regular, she bypassed the usual security checks. Transaction complete, Elena shoved the vials into her bag and walked out into the sweltering alley.
"Get out of my way, you filthy rat!"
a hulking brute bellowed, violently kicking a beggar sitting by the curb.
Panhandlers were a dime a dozen in Thailos, especially around the black market.
But the brute wasn't satisfied with just a kick; he spitefully punted the beggar's meager coin bowl across the pavement!
The beggar curled up on the dirt, wailing, though they couldn't seem to form actual words.
"Hey!" Elena snapped, stepping in his path. "He wasn't even in your way. Back off."
"Who the hell are you? A tourist? You want to play hero with me? Do you know who I am?"
"I don't care who you are. Apologize and pay him for what you spilled."
"Make me, you little—"
Before he could finish his threat, Elena had clamped her fingers onto his wrist, twisting it just short of snapping the bone.
A high-pitched scream tore from his throat as blinding pain shot up his arm.
The sheer, terrifying grip strength from someone so petite sent a cold wave of dread through the brute.
"Apologize!"
"I-I'm sorry! I'm sorry!"
"Pay him!"
Trembling, the man fished out a wad of Thailos cash with his free hand and dropped it by the beggar.
Only then did Elena release her iron grip, letting him scurry away like a rat.
Elena knelt, scooped up the scattered bills, and gently placed them into the beggar's lap.
"Here. Get yourself something to eat," she said softly.
Suddenly, a frantic, muffled whimper caught her attention.
Looking over, she noticed a row of beggars lined up in the shadows of the alley. Every single one of them was brutally mutilated.
The beggar shook her head vigorously, continuing to whimper in a frantic cadence.
She couldn't form words.
"I'm sorry, I have a flight to catch. But I can call an aid shelter to come pick you up."
The beggar shook her head even harder, thrashing violently against Elena's shins.
Elena stared down, shocked to see tears streaming from the mangled, empty eye sockets!
The sheer, raw anguish in those tears made Elena's chest tighten.
She crouched down, a bizarre, suffocating sense of familiarity washing over her.
"Do you... know me?" Elena asked, her voice trembling slightly.
"Mmph! Mmmph! Mmmph!"
The beggar nodded frantically, trembling with desperate energy.
A horrifying, impossible realization slammed into Elena's mind. With a shaking hand, she reached out and brushed the matted hair away from the ruined face.
