Raven POV

“You bitch,” Marissa’s scream is so ear-piercing that I can’t help but wince, even as my hands desperately grab at the sheet, quickly wrapping it around me, “you stole my fiancée!”

“Marissa, she didn’t steal anything. Besides, you’re one to talk, drugging me last night,” Hades snapped, drawing himself up. “You can’t exactly play the victim here,” he snarled.

“I did that because I love you so much,” Marissa denied, her voice shaking, putting a hand to the back of her head, her hair resembling something similar to a bird’s nest, her clothes rumpled, her makeup smeared from tears. I just wanted to be with you,” she pleaded between quivering lips, “is that so wrong?” she ended in a whisper. just wanted to show you how much I loved you, to spend a night in your arms. Make you want me back.”

She sounds almost broken. Deranged. I almost feel sorry for her. Almost.

“You don’t drug somebody you love,” I spoke up, my voice harsh, Marissa’s eyes turning cold as she turned back to me, “you don’t force something that’s not there.”

“Like you can talk,” she screamed, “just look at the both of you. You think I can’t tell you fucked each other? Oh my god,” her voice breaks as she moves closer, her eyes zeroing in on our necks, “you marked each other,” she shrieked, “Hades we were meant to be getting married tomorrow! Have you no shame? How can you do this to me? What about my reputation? What about me!”

It was always about her. What she wanted, what she needed. Nobody else mattered. She’d always been that way.

Selfish.

“I don’t love you, Marissa,” Hade’s voice is heavy, his hands held out in supplication, “I never did. I thought marrying you was the best choice because romance wouldn’t enter into it, but I see now I was wrong. I’m sorry for hurting you, but breaking off the engagement and not proceeding with the ceremony is the best decision for both of us now. I’ll find another way to compensate you and the alliance is not necessary now.”

I snuck a glance at Hades, who is silently nodding in agreement.

“But she’s an anomaly,” Marissa shouted wildly, gesturing to me and glowering, “she doesn’t even have a wolf. She’s useless to you!”

I knew she was going to bring that up. My one weakness, the one thing that can’t be helped, all used in her determination to make Hades see me differently. Unfortunately for her, it doesn’t work.

“I’m enough to protect us both,” Hade’s voice was firm, “Raven doesn’t need to have a wolf for me to fall for her. I love her just the way she is.”

“Raven, Raven, Raven,” she spat out between gritted teeth, her hands clenching into tight fists, her eyes glancing repeatedly between Hades and me, “all everybody talks about is her. What does she have that I don’t? What’s so special about her?!” she seethed.
