“I need to travel for business purposes tonight. I was just giving you a heads up,” he said calmly.

“Oh?” Marissa sits up, “can I come? Please, Hades,” she made her lower lip tremble as she opened her eyes wide, “we rarely spend time together. It would be a good opportunity to show me exactly what kind of business you conduct.”

Not to mention keep his bloody mind off Raven. It would be a welcome distraction for both of them.

He frowns. She holds her breath. He’s rejected all of her ideas thus far and her advances. At this rate, she has nothing left to lose. She silently wills him to agree. She can’t bear to lose face again and lose. this battle of the wills. Her temper is barely hanging by a thread. Her mother would be so angry if she found out that Marissa had missed out on this opportunity.

“I’ll be quite busy. You’ll be alone most of the time,” he murmured, still reluctant but considerig it as she almost beams at him.

“I don’t mind. What kind of business are you doing? “She asked excitedly.

Touring a hotel I just built. I want to make sure everything is running smoothly and meet with the manager. If we go, we’re going to be sleeping in separate rooms,” he warned as she nodded obediently,” and you can’t interrupt my meeting.”

“I’ll find something else to do,” she promised, putting a hand on her chest and nodding adamantly as he hummed and hawed at her.

Fool. Stop thinking about Raven and accept that Marissa is the one you should be prioritizing. Having her accompany you is a good thing, he thought without conviction, and maybe it will be a way for you to stop thinking about the woman you can never have and start accepting your decision to marry another.

But his heart ached at the thought, and even when he left, all he could think about was her, and even Marissa’s constant chatter wasn’t enough to make him forget. His wolf put up a block inside his mind, unable to bear the constant irritating sound of Marissa’s voice, his own anger vibrating inside of Hades as he swallowed hard, acknowledging his wolf was not about to show up anytime soon, unless it was a dire emergency.

As Hades leaves, Marissa’s eyes dart back to her phone. Why wasn’t her mother responding to her calls or her texts?
