Chapter 138
We made our way together toward our quarters, additional security flanking us the entire distance, and I found my father in the kitchen, Evelyn beside him, both looking up with immediate alarm as we entered, clearly registering something significant in our tense, urgent expressions.
“What happened,” my father asked, already standing despite his continued physical limitations.
I showed him the note, watching his face drain of color as he read the explicit threat against my mother’s life, his hands beginning to shake visibly as the full weight of it settled in.
“No,” he said, his voice breaking. “No, she can’t-Sarah, are you alright? Did she-”
“I’m fine,” my mother said quickly, moving to his side, taking his shaking hands in hers. “I’m safe, Robert. Additional security’s already been arranged.”
His breathing had already begun to labor, and I watched with mounting horror as his hand moved instinctively to his chest, the exact pattern that had preceded both his previous cardiac episodes.
“Dad.” I moved quickly toward him. “Breathe. Slow, deliberate breaths. You need to stay calm.”
“She’s threatening to kill Sarah,” he said, his voice tight with panic despite my urgent instruction. “After everything, after the attack, now she’s directly threatening-”
“I know,” I said, keeping my own voice as steady as I could manage despite the genuine terror building in my own chest at watching him spiral toward another potential episode. “I know, Dad, but you need to actually breathe through this. Panicking isn’t going to help your mother, and it’s genuinely dangerous for your own heart.”
Evelyn moved quickly to get water, and my mother continued holding his hands, her own voice carrying careful, déliberate calm despite her obvious fear.
“I’m here,” she said softly. “I’m safe, Robert. We’re going to figure this out together.”
Gradually, his breathing began to settle, though his color remained concerningly pale, and I watched him carefully, understanding how genuinely close we’d just come to another cardiac emergency, triggered directly by this latest, escalating threat.
“I need the healers to check him,” I said, already reaching for my phone. “Just to make sure this stress hasn’t triggered anything more serious.”
The healers arrived within minutes, checking his vitals with careful, professional attention, eventually confirming his heart rate had elevated dangerously but hadn’t progressed into a full cardiac event, though they emphasized strongly that continued stress of this magnitude genuinely risked his survival.
“He cannot continue experiencing this level of acute stress,” the lead healer said quietly, once she’d finished her assessment. “His heart simply cannot sustain repeated episodes like this. We need to find a way to genuinely resolve this ongoing threat, or protect him from continued exposure to it entirely.”
I nodded, understanding the gravity of what she was saying, feeling the weight of it settle heavy in my chest alongside the continued, savage fury still simmering beneath my forced composure.
Callum arrived shortly after, his expression grim as he took in the scene-my father resting now, pale and exhausted, my mother beside him, Evelyn hovering nearby with obvious concern.
“I’ve already coordinated additional security for your mother,” he said quietly, pulling me aside. “And I’ve contacted Ashford territory directly, given their offer to assist. Their Alpha’s agreed to send trained trackers, additional resources specifically focused on locating Genevieve.”

“How soon,” I asked, urgency sharpening my voice.

“Within the next day or two,” Callum confirmed. “They’re mobilizing quickly, given the severity of what’s escalated here.”
