Rejected and Pregnant I Fled The Pack (Evelyn and Damon) novel Chapter 149

Damon pov

I paced the length of the waiting area, back and forth, back and forth, unable to stop moving despite the exhaustion weighing heavy on every part of my body, blood from my father’s wound still dried and cracking against my hands despite my attempts to wipe it away.

My mother sat in one of the chairs, Evelyn beside her, both of them watching me with matching expressions of exhausted, terrified worry, though neither attempted to actually stop my restless movement, apparently understanding I needed some outlet for the overwhelming, helpless fear currently consuming me.

Callum arrived a while into the wait, his expression grim, and I stopped my pacing immediately, urgent need for information overriding everything else.

“Genevieve,” I said, the single word carrying every ounce of fury and fear still churning beneath my exhausted composure.

“She escaped during the chaos,” Callum said, watching my expression carefully. “But she was injured during the confrontation -locks like she caught herself on the rocky terrain near the cliff’s edge, possibly during the struggle when warriors first moved to subdue her. Trackers are already on her scent, following the blood trail.”

“How badly injured,” I asked, genuine, complicated tangle of anger and something almost like grim satisfaction present beneath the question.

“Significant enough that she shouldn’t be able to travel far or fast,” Callum said. “The trackers are confident they’ll locate her within hours, given the trail she’s leaving.”

I nodded, some small measure of relief building beneath my continued terror about my father’s condition, understanding at least that Genevieve’s continued threat might finally, genuinely be approaching resolution.

“What about Dad,” Callum asked, his voice softening slightly.

“Still in surgery,” I said, my voice tight with exhaustion and fear. “No updates yet.”

Callum settled into one of the remaining chairs, and I resumed my restless pacing, my mind cycling through everything that had happened-the attack, my father’s desperate, protective shove, his staggering steps toward the cliff’s edge, the terrifying moment I’d managed to haul him back from the precipice, the cardiac event that had followed almost immediately after.

*He saved me,* I kept thinking, the realization settling heavier with each pass across the small waiting room. *He took the hit meant for me, sacrificed his own already fragile safety to protect mine.*

“You should sit down,” Evelyn said gently, watching my continued, restless movement with obvious concern. “You’re going to exhaust yourself completely.”

“I can’t,” I admitted, my voice rough. “I can’t sit still right now, Evelyn. I keep thinking about everything that happened, replaying it over and over, wondering if there was some way I could have prevented this entirely.”

“You couldn’t have,” she said firmly. “You prepared as thoroughly as genuinely possible, positioned extensive security, brought medical support. Genevieve’s attack was sudden, unpredictable, exactly the kind of violence no amount of preparation could have fully anticipated.”

I nodded, though guilt remained heavy regardless, understanding intellectually the truth in her words even as emotional weight continued pressing down mercilessly.

My mother remained largely quiet throughout the waiting, her hands folded tightly in her lap, occasionally wiping at fresh tears, and I found myself watching her with matching, complicated grief and fear, understanding she was facing the terrifying possibility of losing him now, just as they’d genuinely begun rebuilding something real between them.

“He promised me,” she said quietly, more to herself than anyone specifically. “He promised he’d fight to stay.”

+20 Bon

“He is fighting,” I said, moving to sit beside her finally, needing the physical connection despite my restless energy.’ Whatever’s happening in that surgical suite right now, I have to believe he’s genuinely fighting, exactly like he promised.”
