Rejected and Pregnant I Fled The Pack (Evelyn and Damon) novel Chapter 148

Chapter 148

His eyes fluttered slightly, some flicker of consciousness still fighting through whatever overwhelming shock and pain currently gripped his system, and his lips moved slightly, though the words came out barely audible, thin and weak.

“Tried,” he whispered. “Tried to protect you.”

“I know,” I said, tears streaming freely down my face now despite my complete inability to stop them. “You saved me, Dad. You saved me, and now I need you to save yourself too. Please.”

The medical team lifted him carefully onto a stretcher, moving with urgent, practiced speed toward the vehicle. waiting to transport him back toward proper facilities, and I followed closely, refusing to release his hand even as they worked to stabilize him during the frantic journey.

Behind us, I caught fragmented glimpses of Genevieve being restrained by several warriors, her earlier violent fury apparently having collapsed into something more broken, more genuinely unstable, though my attention remained almost entirely fixed on my father’s increasingly pale, labored breathing.

“Stay with me,” I kept repeating, my voice raw and desperate. “Please, Dad. Stay with me.”

The drive back toward the medical wing felt endless, every minute stretching into agonizing eternity, my father’s condition apparently deteriorating steadily despite the medical team’s continued, urgent efforts to stabilize him.

I called Evelyn the moment we were moving, my voice barely holding together as I relayed everything-the attack, the wound, the cardiac event, my father’s increasingly fragile, uncertain condition.

“Oh god,” Evelyn’s voice came through, thick with immediate, overwhelming distress. “Is he going to be okay?”

“I don’t know,” I admitted, my voice breaking entirely now. “Evelyn, I don’t know if he’s going to survive this.”

“I’ll call his mother, get her to the medical wing immediately,” Evelyn said, urgency and fear both evident despite her obvious effort to remain functional and helpful amid the crisis. “Damon, breathe. You need to stay strong for him right now.”

I forced myself to take a shaky breath, understanding the wisdom in her words even as terror continued gripping every part of my chest, watching the medical team’s continued, focused efforts to keep my father stable during the remainder of our desperate journey back toward proper facilities.

We arrived at the medical wing to find additional healers already waiting, alerted ahead of time, and they immediately took over, wheeling him quickly into emergency surgery, the doors closing behind them with a finality that struck something cold and terrified deep in my chest.

I stood there in the sudden, ringing silence of the hallway, blood still visible on my hands, my entire body trembling with adrenaline and terror both, understanding I now faced the same agonizing wait I’d endured twice before, except this time, given everything his heart had already survived, everything the surgeon had warned about continued additional damage, I genuinely didn’t know if he’d actually survive this third, most severe crisis.

My mother arrived within minutes, her face already streaked with tears, having clearly received Evelyn’s urgent call, and she rushed toward me immediately.

“What happened,” she demanded, her voice breaking with obvious terror. “Damon, tell me exactly what happened.”

I explained everything as clearly as I could manage despite my own continued, overwhelming shock-Genevieve’s sudden attack, my father shoving me aside to take the hit meant for me, his stumble toward the cliff’s edge, the

cardiac event apparently triggered by the combined trauma and shock.

“He saved me,” I said, my voice breaking entirely now. “He pushed me out of the way, took the attack meant for me, and now–” I couldn’t finish the sentence, terror and grief both crashing through me with overwhelming force.
