Under the crushing pressure of their new boss, the entire department stayed behind.
It wasn't until nine o'clock that they finally finished their workload.-
The project leaders Jaxson had specifically called out were glaring miserably at their monitors, none of them daring to be the first to suggest leaving.
Phoebe's phone rang. It was her daughter, Lily Lennox, calling to ask when she was coming home.
Phoebe lowered her voice. "Lily, you and Grandma go to sleep first. Mommy will be home a bit later."
Lily's sweet, childish voice replied, "Okay. Don't work too hard, Mommy. Grandma and I can just eat a little less so you don't have to worry."
A massive lump formed in Phoebe's throat.
Afraid she was about to cry, she hurriedly hung up the phone.
But her heart refused to settle, her mind echoing with Lily's innocent words.
Phoebe had given her daughter the surname Lennox as a tribute to her late father, Edward Lennox. After his passing, Phoebe and Mrs. Lennox wanted his legacy to carry on through Lily.
No one in the world knew that Lily was actually Jaxson's daughter.
Not even Jaxson himself would ever find out he had a blood-related child in this world.
Lily was two years old. She had an autoimmune issue and had been prone to getting sick since birth.
The doctors called it an expensive condition that required a massive amount of money to manage.
Phoebe had taken Lily to see specialists, and the monthly medication alone cost thousands of dollars. But as long as it helped nurse her daughter back to health, she didn't care how much it cost.
When the Vance family went bankrupt, Phoebe sold off her designer bags, jewelry, cars, and real estate, barely managing to pay off a fraction of their crushing debt.
Now, both Mrs. Lennox and Lily needed expensive treatments, and the entire family relied solely on Phoebe's income.
So, even though seeing Jaxson had left her completely shell-shocked—even though her first instinct was to run and her legs wouldn't stop shaking—she couldn't afford to lose this job.
She needed the money.
Noticing she had just hung up with her daughter, the coworker in the next cubicle smiled. "I really didn't expect you to have such a big kid when you're this young. Where's the dad?"
