Back in the day, heiress Phoebe Vance wouldn't have been caught dead taking someone's hand-me-downs.
But things were different now. Even the clothes she was wearing were leftovers from before her family's bankruptcy. She had no money for anything new.
Phoebe smiled warmly. "I'd love that. Worn-in clothes are the best for kids anyway—soft and clean. Thank you, Autumn."
Autumn came from money and drove a Porsche to work. When she said 'worn once', she usually meant pristine, high-end designer gear.
Bringing them back for Lily, giving them a good wash, and letting her wear them sounded perfect to Phoebe.
Seeing how gracefully Phoebe accepted the offer, Autumn breathed a sigh of relief.
She had been terrified Phoebe might feel insulted, but she really wanted to help. Buying new clothes would have been overstepping and forced Phoebe to figure out a way to return the favor, so offering barely-used items was the safest bet.
After all, they worked in the same office.
Phoebe desperately wanted to avoid running into Jaxson, but fate had other plans.
Operating on entirely too little sleep, she walked into the breakroom to make herself a coffee, only to freeze when she saw the man radiating sheer, suffocating authority standing right inside.
The breakroom wasn't small, but Jaxson was tall and broad-shouldered. His sheer presence seemed to swallow all the oxygen, filling the space with a tense, nerve-wracking pressure.
Backing out now would look ridiculous, so Phoebe braced herself, keeping her eyes cast downward. "Good morning, Mr. Hayes."
"Mm."
Jaxson's gaze swept coldly over her, showing absolutely no intention of starting a conversation.
Nor did he show any intention of leaving.
Phoebe brewed her espresso, dumped a handful of ice cubes into it, and turned to leave the breakroom.
"Are the revisions done?" Jaxson's voice sliced through the silence.
Phoebe's fingers tightened around her cup. She instinctively took a step back. "They're done. I'll bring them to your office shortly."
She was acting like he was a terrifying predator.
Jaxson replied coldly, "No need. Just email them."
