She Turned Her Grief Into Wings novel Chapter 44

“Yeah?”

She looked up at him, her eyes filled with worry. “The winner of this competition has already been decided. Apparently, some heiress is heading abroad, and her father wants to use this competition to pad her resume, so…”

“I’m just worried that Ms. Jewell is going to end up as a stepping stone for the elite.”

“Caden, shouldn't you help her? I’m sure Ms. Jewell has poured her heart into this.” She tugged gently at his sleeve, her voice softening. “Maybe… it could even help mend things between you two.”

Caden stared at the hand gripping his sleeve, then let his gaze drift up to her earnest face. After a long moment, he gave a low hum of agreement.

Together, they went to the hospital to visit Zachary Sutton. After half a month of rehab, he was mostly recovered.

Over the years, Caden had frequently visited and looked out for him in every way possible. Deep down, Zachary felt deeply gratified by this.

Looking at the man before him, Zachary sighed. “I can't believe how fast the years go by. I remember when I first brought Helga back, you were only this tall.” He gestured vaguely to his chest.

“Time really flies.” He tapped his lower back lightly with a therapy hammer, making no effort to hide his admiration for Caden. “The little guy turned into a corporate titan, running a massive empire like the Hayes Group. The younger generation truly is formidable.”

Caden offered a faint smile. “You’re too kind, sir. I’m nowhere near as impressive as you make it sound. You’re just remembering me as a kid.”

“Ah, you’re far too modest.” He looked at Caden, a hint of regret slipping into his tone. “You two grew up together. I always thought you’d end up married in the end, but I never expected…”

Hearing her father bring this up, Helga frowned, her tone instantly displeased. “Why are you talking about this? Caden is already married. Saying things like that is going to give Ms. Jewell the wrong idea.”

Zachary turned to her, half-joking. “The conversation just led here naturally. Why are you taking it so seriously?”

Helga rolled her eyes and turned back to Caden. “Please don't mind him, Caden. My dad is just like this. He loves to joke around.”

Caden’s expression remained perfectly impassive. He simply nodded. “You’re absolutely right. Helga and I grew up together. That kind of bond is something nobody else can compare to.”

Helga froze for a fraction of a second. The look she gave Caden turned slightly bashful, a small smile playing on her lips.
