She Was Never Just the Billionaire’s Wife (Natasha and Chase) novel Chapter 11

Chapter 11 The Unbeatable Empire

(Natasha)

Even leaning heavily against Gloria, walking back to our table takes a long time.

My swollen knee throbs badly with every single step. The pain shoots up my leg, making it hard to think clearly.

We both stop dead when we see Elias Warren is sitting calmly at our table.

Chase’s grandfather rests both of his hands on his silver cane.

He looks completely relaxed, just waiting for us to return.

Sitting down across from him, Gloria keeps a protective hand near my arm. She doesn’t look worried at all.

Elias looks at me with sharp eyes.

Clearly, he already knows everything about my current situation.

“You are a very brave woman, Natasha,” the old man says quietly.

His voice is never loud, but it always carries total authority.

“Challenging my grandson takes a lot of courage. Building your own team to fight him for the Bauer deal takes

guts.”

Hearing him talk about my plan out loud makes my stomach drop.

He knows about the divorce papers. He knows about Mason. He knows exactly what I’m doing.

“However,” Elias continues, leaning forward slightly.

“You must remember who built the Warren empire. Chase is the current CEO, but I am the true face of the company. We are unbeatable.”

His words are stated as a simple, hard fact.

“I stand by the choice I made when I picked you for my grandson,” Elias says.

“You have a brilliant mind. You are the right woman to raise the next generation of Warrens.”

Taking a slow, deep breath, I try to keep my face totally blank.

Showing fear is a bad idea right now.

“But let me be very clear,” Elias warns, his tone turning cold and hard.

“If you do anything to humiliate the Warren name in public again, you will not be dealing with Chase. You will be dealing with me.”

The threat is real and very dangerous.

Fighting Chase is one thing. Fighting Elias is a completely different game.

Then, the old man does something completely unexpected.

“I just had a very productive talk with Sonia and Nathanial Morton,” he announces smoothly.

My eyes widen slightly in surprise.

“Sonia will not be going anywhere near Chase while you are still pregnant,” Elias states.

“She will not go near you, either.”

This news is shocking. Elias is actually stepping in to control his grandson’s mistress.

“The young lady is not happy about it, of course,” he adds with a quick, dismissive wave of his hand.

“But her brother is a smart businessman. Nathanial can see reason. He agreed to my terms.”

Standing up slowly, Elias leans heavily on his cane.

He gives me one last, serious look. Then he turns around and walks out of the restaurant without another word

Unease settles over me once he’s gone.

Having Sonia out of the picture will be wonderful, but I’m deeply rattled by the rest of the conversation.

Dealing with Chase alone for the divorce was my main goal.

Getting the papers signed before his grandfather caught wind of the mess was my greatest hope for a clean break.

Clearly, I failed. Elias has eyes everywhere in this city.

Gloria must see the deep worry on my face.

She quickly waves down a waiter to pay the bill.

“You’re obviously upset,” Gloria says firmly. “We’re leaving right now. I’ll drive you back to your hotel.”

Nodding silently, I gladly accept her help.

I need rest and quiet so I can figure out a new plan.

Getting up is hell. My bad knee screams in protest as soon as I put my weight on it.

Leaning heavily on Gloria, we slowly walk toward the front entrance of the restaurant.

Every step is a struggle.

Nathanial Morton is standing near the heavy wooden doors. Clearly waiting for his sister to come out of the

restroom.

When he sees us approaching, his tall posture stiffens.

His sharp eyes quickly scan my pale face.

Then he looks down at my swollen knee.

Something in his strict expression actually shifts.

For a brief second, the cold businessman disappears. He looks genuinely worried about my health.

“I’m taking you to the hospital,” Nathanial says.

He steps forward quickly, reaching out a hand to support my arm.

Gloria immediately blocks his path.

“Absolutely not,” she snaps.
