Chapter 12 The Prescription
(Natasha)
I visit my doctor’s office first thing the next morning.
Getting the new medicine Gloria mentioned is my top priority.
With any luck I’ll have fewer injuries once the old medication is out of my system.
Sitting in a stiff chair, I rub a hand over my large stomach, idly wondering what my child’s personality will be like.
The main door to the clinic’s inner offices suddenly opens and Sonia steps into the hallway.
Seeing my husband’s mistress leaving my gynecologist feels incredibly weird.
He’s one of the best doctors in the city, and Chase probably told her to come here.
Knowing that doesn’t make me feel better.
She stops dead the moment she sees me and all the color instantly leaves her pretty face.
Elias Warren’s threat clearly worked. The old man must have scared her badly last night.
Without saying a single word, Sonia quickly turns down the corridor.
She practically runs down the hallway to avoid me.
Watching her flee with her tail between her legs feels surprisingly good.
A nurse eventually calls my name. She leads me into a small, bright examination room.
Dr. Evans is usually a very calm and professional man.
He’s been treating me for years. Managing my disease long before I became pregnant.
Today, however, he looks completely rattled.
He jumps slightly when I close the door behind me.
Small drops of sweat shine on his forehead. He keeps wiping his hands on his white coat.
“I didn’t know you scheduled an emergency appointment,” he tells me with a stiff smile.
“Did something happen?”
Sitting on the edge of the exam table, I explain the new Swiss medication Gloria found, and hand him the research.
I expect a long argument.
Normally, he questions any changes to my medical routine.
I expect him to insist on running his own tests first.
He shocks me by agreeing to my request immediately.
“Yes, of course,” Dr. Evans says quickly.
He writes on his prescription pad with shaking hands.

“I’ve read about great results in many patients with similar situations. I was going to suggest we switch your prescription the next time you come in.”
It sounds believable, but he won’t even look me in the eye.
He keeps staring at his desk, avoiding my gaze completely.
He drops his pen twice while writing his notes.
A strange, cold feeling settles in my stomach.
Why is he acting so nervous?
Seeing Sonia leaving his office just minutes before I arrived suddenly feels very suspicious.
Was she here for an appointment for herself, or did she offer him money to hurt my baby?
Sharing a doctor with a woman who hates me feels very dangerous right now.
Still, getting off the heavy steroids is my main goal.
I want my real face and body back.
Maybe I’m just being paranoid. Maybe the doctor is having a bad day.
If he’s still acting weirdly at my next appointment, I’ll find a new gynecologist.
?
I leave the clinic as fast as my bad knee allows, deciding to fill the prescription at a different pharmacy.
The rest of the week turns into a nonstop work grind.
Taking Chase down requires all my focus and energy.
I spend hours in strategy meetings with lower-level executives at Mason’s firm.
We tear apart Jeffrey Bauer’s company data line by line.
Finding his business vulnerabilities becomes my new obsession.
We look for any weak spots in his financial reports. We study his past deals and his current debts.
I stay awake learning everything there is to know about Bauer’s daily operations.
Working until midnight every single day is exhausting.
My pregnant body aches constantly.
My swollen feet hurt, and my back throbs. But the hard work is necessary to win this war.
The one glaring absence from my busy days is Mason.
I haven’t seen him at all since the night of the gala.
Honoring the terms of the bet with Chase means staying away from him completely, and it’s surprisingly hard.
I really miss his steady presence.
I miss having him sit across the table while we plan our next move, making silly jokes to ease the tension.
His quiet support always makes me feel safe.
Going back to my hotel room after the doctor’s visit, the quiet suddenly becomes too much to bear.
