Chapter 15 The Impossible News
(Chase)
Natasha stares at me from the hospital bed, saying absolutely nothing.
Looking at her pale face, a deep annoyance builds in my chest.
“What exactly happened over the last few days?” I demand, breaking the silence.
“Why are you in a hospital bed?”
he doesn’t flinch. Her eyes remain completely cold.
“That’s none of your business, Chase,” she answers smoothly.
“You’re still my wife,” I remind her, stepping closer to the bed.
“Your health is my business. You represent my family.”
“We are competing against each other,” Natasha replies, keeping her voice completely steady.
“My daily schedule does not concern you anymore. I’m not your employee.”
Before I can argue, she sits up slightly against the pillows.
“Besides,” she continues, “I’ve done exactly what you dared me to. Jeffrey Bauer is in my pocket. I won the bet, Chase.”
Hearing those words feels impossible. She can’t be telling the truth.
“It’s true.”
Nathanial speaks up from the corner of the room.
“Bauer let me know that he’s leaning toward accepting her proposal. She’s secured his preliminary agreement.”
Total shock hits my system.
Staring at the woman in the bed, my mind struggles to accept the news.
She actually pulled it off.
A pregnant, exhausted woman just beat me at my own game.
“Now that the bet is officially over with,” Natasha says, pulling my attention back to her, “The rules are done. I’ll see Mason whenever I want.”
Mason tightens his grip on her hand and glares at me with a smug look.
“I also have no problem with you seeing Sonia,” Natasha adds easily.
“You can parade your mistress around the city freely. I don’t care.”
Boiling anger rushes through my veins.
I want to yell.
I want to tear the room apart.
She thinks she holds all the power now.
Before I can let my anger explode, a sudden noise comes from the doorway.
Turning my head, I see Sonia.
“Chase,” she whispers, before collapsing to the ground.
“Sonia!” Nathanial shouts.
He runs across the room and drops to his knees beside his sister.
Stepping away from the bed, I hurry to the door to help.
Before we can even call for a nurse, a man in a white coat comes rushing down the hallway.
It’s Dr. Evans, Natasha’s gynecologist.
“What happened here?” Dr. Evans asks, looking down at Sonia on the floor.

Sonia slowly opens her eyes. She blinks a few times and grabs her brother’s arm, groaning pitifully.
Nathanial carefully helps her stand up against the wall.
“I need to speak to Miss Morton outside,” Dr. Evans says nervously.
“I want Chase and my brother to come with me,” Sonia whispers.
Her voice is weak and shaking.
“I need them.”
Dr. Evans leads us into an empty private room down the hall.
Nathanial guides Sonia to a chair.
I stand near the door, crossing my arms over my chest.
Dr. Evans closes the door and looks highly uncomfortable.
“Miss Morton,” the doctor begins, looking down at a medical file in his hands.
“I have the results from the tests we ran earlier today at my clinic. Fainting is a common symptom.”
“A symptom of what?” Nathanial demands angrily. “Tell us what’s wrong with her.”
“She’s pregnant,” Dr. Evans announces quietly.
Hearing the news makes my entire body freeze.
It’s impossible.
My mind races through the last few months.
We’ve never had sex.
We’ve kissed and canoodled, but we never actually went to bed together.
I made sure to keep a careful distance to avoid exactly this situation.

“That’s impossible,” I say flatly, looking directly at Sonia. “We’ve never-”
Sonia looks down at her hands.
A dark red blush covers her cheeks.
“It happened that night at your house, Chase,” she whispers softly, interrupting ine.
“The night we drank red wine in your study.”
Searching my memory, I remember that specific evening clearly.
I was exhausted after a long day of meetings.
Sonia brought a bottle of very expensive wine, which seemed to go straight to my head after a single glass.
