She Was Never Just the Billionaire’s Wife (Natasha and Chase) novel Chapter 16

Chapter 16 The Unwelcome Guest

(Natasha)

Dr. Evans walks back into my hospital room, with Chase right behind him, looking angry and tense, his jaw locked tight.

No sign of Sonia and Nathanial.

I would have liked to thank Nathaniel for getting me to the hospital so fast, but I’m happy to not have to deal with

Sonia.

“We need to be very clear about the risks,” the doctor says, looking back and forth between Chase and me.

“Any severe emotional shock or physical exhaustion could easily trigger premature labor. You must avoid stress completely. This is not a suggestion. It is a strict medical necessity.”

Hearing the warning makes the room go perfectly quiet.

“I’ll handle her care,” Chase announces firmly.

He steps closer to the bed. “I’ll hire private nurses to take care of her at the estate.”

“No, you won’t,” Mason replies immediately.

He stands up from the chair next to my bed.

Giving Mason a dark, hateful look, Chase turns his attention back to me.

He opens his mouth to argue the point.

Suddenly, the heart monitor beside my bed begins to beep a little faster.

The stress of their fighting instantly affects my body.

Noticing the loud machine, Chase tightens his jaw.

He clearly wants to fight Mason on this, but the doctor’s warning stops him.

Reluctantly, he steps back and walks out of the room without saying another word.

Mason leans forward as soon as Chase is gone.

“Do you want me to call the Kellys?” he asks gently.

“They should know you’re in the hospital. I’m sure they’d want to be here for you.”

Shaking my head, I look down at the white blankets.

“Please don’t call them,” I answer.

“I don’t want them to worry.”

“They’re your family, Natasha. They’ll want to support you.”

“I haven’t told them about everything that’s happening at the moment,” I confess softly.

“They raised me in a quiet, peaceful home. I want them to think I’m happily married and enjoying a successful Career”

Mason frowns, but he doesn’t push the issue.

“My plan is to sort everything out first,” I explain.

“Taking care of the divorce and securing my custody rights are my main priorities right now. Once that’s over with, I’ll share the truth and introduce them to their grandchild.”

Over the next couple of days, Mason practically lives in my hospital room.

He works quietly from the small visitor couch.

Whenever his cell phone rings, he quickly steps out into the hallway to answer it. Keeping his voice low, making sure I can rest.

Watching him type with his laptop balanced on his lap makes me feel incredibly guilty.

“You don’t have to do this, Mason,” I say on the second afternoon.

“You have a massive company to run. You’re wasting your time sitting here.”

He stops typing and closes the laptop, smiling gently at me.

“I want to be here,” he replies simply.

“My company can run without me physically being there for a few days.”

His steady, quiet presence actually unsettles me more than Chase’s cold indifference ever did.

Having someone take care of me reveals a terrifying truth.

Carrying the stress of my life alone was something I thought was completely normal.

During my entire marriage, I handled all the problems by myself.

Even before the wedding, when I loved Chase from afar, he only saw me as his highly competent CFO.

Emotionally I’ve been alone for a very long time.

Mason shows me exactly what real, selfless support looks like, and it’s scary to realize how much I carried alone.

The morning I’m finally discharged, the hospital room door swings open without a knock.

Eleanor Warren walks in, looking perfect in an expensive designer suit.

She doesn’t ask how I’m feeling.

In fact, she doesn’t even look me in the eyes.

Her cold gaze goes straight to my abdomen.

“This happened because you failed to prioritize the family,” Eleanor declares sharply.

“You could have killed the baby.”

Standing near the edge of the bed, I freeze completely.

Losing my child was a very real threat just days ago, and this is her only reaction.

She blames me for the medical emergency, not Chase for causing the stress.

“You’re moving back to the estate today,” Eleanor orders, stepping closer.

“I want you where I can keep a close eye on you. I won’t allow you to endanger my grandchild again with your foolish business games.”

“I’m afraid that’s not happening,” Mason says calmly.

He steps between Eleanor and me, crossing his arms over his broad chest.

“Natasha will stay with me,” Mason continues in a steady voice.
