She's Too Busy Winning to Watch Him Cry novel Chapter 396

Yvonne stubbornly planted herself in front of the desk. "If you don't make that call today, I'm not leaving."

Just as she spoke, Secretary Montgomery pushed the door open, carrying a stack of files. Yvonne smoothly offered a bright "Hi!", making it crystal clear she was fully prepared to wait Lyra out.

Realizing Yvonne wouldn't budge, Lyra let out a defeated sigh and picked up her phone.

As it rang, Yvonne gestured for her to put it on speaker and set it on the desk.

The man's deep voice came through the line: "Hello? My little chameleon."

Yvonne had no idea what "little chameleon" meant, but she assumed it was some kind of twisted inside joke.

Worried he might say something inappropriate, Lyra cut straight to the chase. "Can you let Miles Ziegler go?"

"Why bring him up out of nowhere?" Rowan asked lazily. "Is he handsome?"

Lyra and Yvonne exchanged a look.

Yvonne immediately crossed her arms in an X, vigorously shaking her head and mouthing the word, *ugly, ugly, ugly*.

"He's very ugly," Lyra relayed.

Yvonne nodded approvingly. If Rowan had a thing for Lyra, praising another man's looks was a death wish. Calling him ugly was the only safe move.

"If he's that ugly, let's keep him locked up. I wouldn't want his face to offend your eyes," Rowan replied smoothly.

Yvonne's mouth twitched.

Refusing to give up, she snatched a pen from the desk caddy and scribbled frantically on a piece of paper: *Old classmate, good friends!*

Reading the note, Lyra said, "The thing is, I have a high school classmate. We used to be really good friends. She asked me for a favor, and keeping Miles locked up is putting me in a tough spot."

Yvonne nodded enthusiastically, subtly flashing Lyra a thumbs-up in approval.

"Is this bothering you?" Rowan's voice was nonchalant.

Lyra glanced at the stubborn woman lounging on her desk. "A little."

Lyra scrambled to brace her hands against the desk, fighting desperately against the pressure so she wouldn't actually have to kiss the phone.

"Lyra?"

Yvonne was half a second away from loudly smooching the air herself to fake it.

Her face burning with humiliation, Lyra finally blurted, "Can I do it in person next time?"

"Sure," Rowan replied softly over the line.

Lyra let out a massive breath and instantly hung up.

Yvonne deflated in relief, throwing her arms around Lyra and jumping up and down. "If I knew it was this easy, I would've come to you sooner!"

"Thank you!" she cheered. "I'll keep my word. You won't see Miles anywhere near you guys again. I really only did this for my grandpa. He's bedridden, and he probably doesn't have much time left. I know my uncle is a total degenerate, but he's still family. I couldn't just leave him there."

With the crisis averted, Yvonne headed for the door. Right before leaving, she turned back and casually asked, "I heard you have a new nephew and niece. Are they super cute?"
