Lyra sat with her back pressed against the cold, hard metal wall of the cabin, her arms securely wrapped around a sleeping Pip. The little guy had whimpered slightly when they were dragged aboard, but now his face was buried in the crook of her neck. His long eyelashes fluttered slightly, and his tiny fists were clamped tightly onto her collar. His breathing was light and even, completely unaware of the mortal danger they were in.
Wesley was bound at the wrists, the dull, lingering numbness of a stun gun still throbbing in his neck. On the way back to Blackwood Manor, he had swerved to avoid an elderly woman who had seemingly tripped in front of his car. Though he had braked in time and hadn't touched her, he had worried it might be a no-contact accident and stepped out to check on her.
The moment he leaned in, the old woman had abruptly tased him. When he woke up, he was already locked inside this yacht.
"Why would they bring us here?" Lyra asked, her voice tight with worry.
Wesley's face was a mask of regret; he couldn't even meet her eyes. His jaw was clenched tight. "They're probably planning to flee by sea. They'll take the whole Ford family, change their identities, and settle abroad, completely escaping Mr. Jameson's reach."
"But how did they know you had the keys to the yacht?"
"Jasmine knew I kept the yacht keys back when she was the secretary," Wesley said through gritted teeth. "Jasmine, Waylon, and Finn have all been on this boat before. In fact, Mr. Jameson even taught Finn how to pilot it..."
Wesley had never imagined that Jasmine's family could be this utterly diabolical. It had completely shattered his worldview.
The biggest problem now was the gun tucked inside his briefcase. Ever since learning of Caspian's return, Rowan had ordered him to carry it at all times for protection. He hadn't expected to be hijacked so abruptly. If the Fords hadn't found it yet, they might be okay. But if they did—the consequences would be unthinkable.
"Wesley?"
Wesley shuddered, his brow knotted in deep anxiety. "Lyra, you have to run!"
Just as the words left his mouth, the iron door of the cabin groaned open, and the hunched figure of Agnes stepped inside.
Agnes's cloudy eyes locked onto Lyra with lethal precision. Her voice was shrill and biting the moment she spoke. "You little homewrecker, stealing Rowan away just like that! If it weren't for you, Jasmine would be sitting comfortably as the lady of the Jameson family right now. She wouldn't be forced to run for her life!"
Lyra instinctively pulled Pip closer, sheltering him behind her as she glared back at the woman, her teeth clenched.
"Good, good. Once Jasmine arrives, we set sail... After we're a few miles out, we'll just toss Lyra overboard to drown. Rowan will be so obsessed with organizing a search and rescue for his wife and kid that he won't have time to stop us."
Muffled voices drifted in from the other side of the door, but the words were too fragmented for Lyra to make out exactly what they were saying.
She lowered her eyes, gently stroking the warm back of her son's head. The yacht hadn't moved yet, meaning they were still waiting for someone. Once they left the port and entered deep waters, all signals would be completely cut off. Forget calling for help—even GPS tracking would become entirely useless.
When that happened, it would be the end for both her and Pip.
She didn't care if she died, but what about Pip? He was still so small. And worse, he hadn't even had a full meal yet!
At that thought, tears welled up in Lyra's eyes. Suddenly, the bathroom door cracked open again. Lyra looked up to see Finn standing there.
He stood in the doorway, quietly looking down at Lyra's bound ankles. Without uttering a single word, he slowly pulled the door shut once more.

The readers' comments on the novel: She's Too Busy Winning to Watch Him Cry
What Rowan did in his past life was horrific, and I’m not excusing it, but he truly did everything he could in his second life to repent and atone for what he did to Lyra. At some point, there has to be room for forgiveness and grace. If someone spends their entire life trying to make amends and become a better person, then what does redemption mean if we never allow them a chance to be forgiven? Even someone who has done terrible things deserves the possibility of redemption, and honestly, I want Rowan to be happy too!...
