Lawrence closed his eyes. "I'll have my assistant reschedule it."

"Reschedule? Do you think specialist appointments can just be rescheduled on a whim?" Eleanor was fuming on the other end of the line. "What is Wren playing at? She's arguing about a divorce with you, so she just abandons her elders' health?"

Lawrence replied coldly, "Mom, she is not the Langfords' butler."

The other end of the line suddenly went dead silent.

Even Lawrence was momentarily stunned after the words left his mouth.

He wasn't speaking up for Wren.

He was just tired of everyone naturally dumping their problems onto her, and then treating her refusal to bear them as a cardinal sin.

Eleanor recovered, her tone turning frostier. "Are you defending her now? If she's really that capable, she shouldn't use your grandmother to pressure you, or use the boy to force your hand."

Lawrence gripped his phone. "She didn't force my hand."

"She didn't? Then where did the court summons come from? How did the manor find out? Why is Leo's school suddenly bothering you?" Eleanor scoffed. "Lawrence, don't let her lead you by the nose. When a woman takes things this far, she just wants to make you bow your head."

Lawrence didn't reply.

Because he had thought the exact same thing.

Even now, he still felt Wren was just trying to force him into submission.

Yet every single thing that happened today felt nothing like a carefully calculated scheme. She didn't cry, she didn't beg, she didn't use the kid to make a scene, and she didn't play the victim in front of his grandmother.

She was simply handing his responsibilities back to him, one by one.

That was far more infuriating than a tantrum.

Back at the Langford Estate, the living room was glaringly messy.

Leo's backpack was tossed on the sofa, his science model missing a solar panel. Eleanor sat in the armchair, looking sullen, while the staff stood silently nearby, too afraid to make a sound.

"Just look at this house right now," Eleanor started the moment she saw him. "Wren's been gone a few days, and it's already a disaster. Do you think she's doing this on purpose? She managed perfectly fine before, and now she suddenly washes her hands of it. Isn't she just giving us attitude?"

Lawrence took off his coat and tossed it to a maid. "If you need to hire someone, hire someone."

Eleanor sneered. "Hire someone? You think just hiring anyone can replace her?"
