She clearly wasn't in this house, yet every single corner was speaking on her behalf.

That wave of irritation surged in Lawrence's chest once more. He picked up his phone and dialed Wren's number.

It rang five times before she picked up.

There was the sound of flipping files in the background, along with the faint tapping of a keyboard.

"Do you need something?" Wren asked.

Hearing her so calm only fueled Lawrence's anger further. "Why didn't you tell me about Leo's school issue in advance?"

Wren paused.

As if verifying whether he realized just how ridiculous he sounded.

"The notice was in the parent group chat, and the hard copy was in his backpack," she said. "The teacher copied you on it too."

"You used to handle all of this."

"So now it's your turn to handle it."

Lawrence let out a cold scoff. "Wren, do you really have to drag the kid into this?"

The line went silent for two seconds.

Her voice turned icy. "Lawrence, I didn't drag the kid into this. He's always been in our marriage."

The words were like a needle, not piercing deeply, but striking exactly the spot he didn't want touched.

Lawrence's face clouded over violently. "What exactly are you trying to prove? Proving that this house can't function without you?"

"No."

Wren spoke softly, but with absolute clarity.

"I want you to know that I wasn't born obligated to make it function."

Lawrence gripped his phone, speechless.

"I will stay involved in Leo's schooling, but I won't cover your tracks for you anymore. For Eleanor's follow-ups, I can forward her previous medical files to her doctor, but you'll need to arrange them yourself from now on. As for Margaret, I'll go see her because of the bond between us, not because I'm Mrs. Langford."

He called Eleanor "Mom," she called her "Eleanor."

Every sentence she spoke was drawing a firm boundary.

No raised voices, no arguing, yet absolutely zero room for negotiation.

Lawrence desperately wanted to interrupt her.
