"Yes."

The line went dead quiet.

It was as if Eleanor couldn't process the word. "What did you say?"

Wren repeated herself. "Yes. My job is more important than the Langford family's tantrums."

Eleanor was so enraged her voice cracked. "Don't forget you're still Mrs. Langford!"

"That is exactly why I'm taking legal action—to terminate that title."

"Do you honestly think you can just walk away because you want to? What about Leo? What about Margaret? Are you really going to throw a child and an old woman into the center of a public scandal?"

Wren stared at her reflection in the glass.

She suddenly realized it didn't hurt as much as it used to.

Eleanor's words were still sharp, but they couldn't pierce her anymore.

Because she finally understood.

Whenever these people brought up her son and Margaret, they weren't showing concern—they were using them as a leash.

They didn't want to solve the problem.

They just wanted to drag her back to her designated spot.

"I'll share custody and handle Leo's matters with Lawrence," Wren stated coldly. "As for Margaret, I will visit her regularly on my own time. Other than that, I am not dropping the divorce suit."

Eleanor scoffed. "You still dare to bring up Margaret? Do you think just because she gave you a shred of support, you can do whatever the hell you want?"

Wren went quiet for a moment.

Then she said, "Margaret didn't tell me to do whatever I wanted."

Eleanor barked, "Then what did she tell you?"

Wren's eyelashes fluttered.

In the nursing home, the frail old woman had gripped her hand, her voice weak but undeniably lucid.

Don't look back.

Wren replied softly, "She told me not to look back."

The line went utterly silent.

A few seconds later, as if the phrase had pushed her over the edge, Eleanor shrieked. "She's gone senile, and you're just as crazy! Wren, don't think you can intimidate the Langford family just by going to court. If you really want to tear this family apart, you're the one who's going to end up looking pathetic!"

Gripping her phone, Wren let out a faint chuckle.

It was barely there.

"Eleanor, I've looked pathetic for years."

Eleanor's breath hitched.

"I used to be terrified of looking pathetic, so I constantly covered up for all of you. Now that I've stopped covering for you, you suddenly care about dignity."

Without waiting for another scream, Wren hung up the phone.

The hallway plunged back into silence.

Wren stood there for a moment before turning back to the conference room.

Seeing her walk in, Phoebe handed her a glass of warm water. "Did you win?"

Wren shook her head. "No."
