Lawrence frowned and looked at Wren.

"It's Leo's birthday. Do you really have to make everyone miserable?"

Wren stared at him.

She had loved this man for years.

From her teenage years straight through six years of marriage, she had placed nearly all her hopes and dreams on his shoulders.

She had waited for him to look back, waited for him to truly see her, waited for the day he would finally understand that she could feel hurt, too.

But after all that waiting, this was what she got.

Do you really have to make everyone miserable?

So, in his eyes, her heartbreak was nothing more than a mood-killer.

Wren suddenly found herself utterly pathetic.

How had it taken her so many years to see something so blindingly obvious?

"Lawrence," she said, calling him by his name.

Lawrence's brow twitched.

Wren rarely used his full name.

She usually just called him Lawrence with a soft, affectionate tone, lacing her voice with a cautious intimacy.

But now, her voice was flat. As flat as a storm that had finally run out of rain.

"I'm not trying to make everyone miserable."

She continued, "I just finally decided I'm done being miserable myself."

Lawrence's gaze darkened. "What is that supposed to mean?"

Wren didn't answer him.

She simply looked at him.

This man she had loved for years, had waited for for years.

She used to think that if she were just a bit more understanding, a bit gentler, if she just held on a little longer, one day he would realize her worth.

But tonight, she finally understood.

There was no point in waiting for a man who refused to look back.

Lawrence's brow furrowed deeper, his tone now laced with irritation.

"Wren, I asked you a question."
