Cecilia’s POV

Morning light shone through the closed curtains, and I let out a groan as I sat up. My hair was all over the place, and it felt like I barely slept at all even though I’d been out for the last several hours.

“Any memories?”

I nearly screamed at the sound of a voice across the room, and I turned to find Beta Conrad leaning against the wall, his arms folded across his chest in his usual stance. His eyes were dark as he studied me, narrowed like he was trying to figure out a puzzle, and I felt a sense of unease wash over me.

“W…what are you doing in here?” I stammered, my heart racing against my ribs. “Have you been here the whole time?”

His frown deepened.

“Somewhat,” he muttered. “Answer the question.”

I swallowed.

“I still remember nothing.”

He pushed off the wall and stepped towards the bed.

“The problem is, I don’t think I believe you,” he said, his tone calm despite the hidden threat. “I think you’re trying to play us for fools.”

“You can believe what you want, but that’s not the truth,” I found myself boldly saying.

I knew I shouldn’t anger this man, but I couldn’t help but defend myself at least a little.

“The only thing standing between you and death is me,” he said, his tone deepening an octave. “If I were you, I would think very carefully about your next words.”

“I already told you what I knew, which was nothing. I have no memories. I don’t even know my own name.”

He stared at me a moment longer, then turned toward the door and pulled it open.

Several warriors stepped into the room, and I grabbed the blanket and pulled it up, closer to my chin. I was still fully dressed in the clothes Lucy and Mariah had given me, but being in a bed with a bunch of warriors in the same room made me feel oddly exposed and uncomfortable.

They were dragging in a man that I didn’t recognize. He wore their armor, though, so I figured he might be one of them. But his scent was different.

When his eyes landed on me, they widened, and he sucked in a sharp breath.

“Cecilia?”

My brows furrowed.

“Who?”

“Found him lurking just within our territory. A few others were with him. They managed to get their hands on our armor and disguised themselves as our warriors. Said they were looking for someone,” Conrad explained, his eyes never leaving my face. “It seems he had found exactly what he was looking for. I asked you yesterday if you knew these outsiders, and you said no. And yet, this one seems to know exactly who you are. Care to explain that, Cecilia?”

He spat the name as if it was a bad taste on his tongue.

The name didn’t sound familiar to me, but the way this man had spoken it so casually and in such a state of shock, I had no reason not to believe that he knew me.

“I’m sorry, but I don’t remember you,” I confess, my eyes finding the strange man. “Are you sure you have the right person?”

His eyes widened.

“What? Cecilia, what is wrong with you? We’ve known each other our whole lives. We’ve been searching for you for days.”

My heart stuttered in my chest; there were people actually looking for me. I stared down at my hands, my fingers trembling. Who had done this to me? Was it them?
