“Her mother’s heirloom,” Warren said without hesitation. “She might not have had it yet, but it’s the most important thing in her life. It’s the only thing she has left of her mother.”

“You’re sure?” I asked, even though I knew it was a stupid question.

For months, Warren developed a special relationship with Cecilia. The kind of relationship I envied; not because Cecilia got to spend time with my wolf, but because my wolf got to spend time with her.

“Of course, I’m sure. I know her better than anyone,” Warren said, his voice dropping an octave.

I thought of the heirloom that the warriors uncovered when they discovered Cecilia was missing. At least, that’s what I assumed it was. Warren had told me she’d been wanting to find her mother’s heirloom after she overheard Diana and Alpha William speaking about it.

When the soldiers gave me the pendant and told me that Cecilia’s blood was found nearby, I knew that’s exactly what she had found before she was kidnapped.

“I have something,” I told Fae and Maevis, my eyes darting between the two of them. “It’s in my room right

now.”

Fae nodded.

“Okay, great.

“We’ll meet in the library,” Maevis suggested.

I didn’t wait around for them to say anything more. I hurried past them and towards the King’s private suite. My footsteps were hurried, though I tried to keep calm despite the storm raging in my mind right now.

Once I was in my chambers, I grabbed the small box that sat on my nightstand. A box I had placed there before I shifted into wolf form and went on the hunt for Cecilia myself. There was a small trace of her blood near the latch, like she had cut herself before she took this box.

The thought made Warren practically feral, and he let out a low and deadly growl in my mind. A growl that I had trouble suppressing.

I opened the box, staring down at the pendant.

My fingers traced the rigid patterns; the unfamiliar design made my chest feel tight.

“What’s the story?” I asked, my voice low. “With her mother, I mean.”

Warren was quiet, and for a moment, I didn’t think he was going to answer.

“She thinks her mother was murdered.”

“What? By whom?” I asked, my brows furrowed.

I snapped the box shut and started towards the library. My calm walk turned into a jog, then a run, not caring who saw.

“She wasn’t sure. But she thinks Diane and William were somehow involved,” Warren replied. “For some reason, Diane had been wanting to get her hands on this heirloom for years, but her mother had it hidden. Nobody could find it.”

“What’s so important about it? It’s just a pendant.”

“We weren’t able to find out yet. You sent her away,” Warren murmured, unable to hide the bitterness in his

voice.

I winced, but I didn’t let my steps falter.
