Chapter 231
Eleanor POV
I stood before the full-length mirror in the temporary white tent, watching sunlight filter through the thin fabric walls. Outside, the city sprawled in all its summer glory, but my attention was fixed on my reflection – a woman in a floor-length wedding gown that seemed to glow in the diffused light. The image looking back at me felt surreal, almost like a dream I’d been afraid to have for so long.
My hands trembled slightly as they smoothed down the silken fabric. This dress – so different from the one I’d worn three years ago when I’d married Derek the first time. That dress had been chosen by Catherine, ornate and traditional, befitting a Wells bride. This one I had selected myself, with Olivia’s enthusiastic approval. Simple, elegant lines that spoke of choice rather than obligation.
“Hold still, Olivia murmured, adjusting my veil with practiced hands. “There. Perfect.”
A lump formed in my throat as I watched her in the mirror. How many times had Olivia wiped away my tears during those lonely years? How many times had she listened when I couldn’t bear the weight of loving a man who seemed determined to keep me at arm’s length?
“I can’t believe this is happening.” I whispered, my fingers tracing the delicate edge of my veil. A month ago, we were in a tent in the woods, and he was proposing. And now…” My voice caught as memories cascaded through me – Derek in the hospital, pale and still; Derek struggling through physical therapy; Derek kneeling before me under the stars, offering his heart without reservation.
“And now you’re getting the wedding you deserve,” Olivia said, her eyes meeting mine in the mirror. She blinked rapidly, fighting tears. “No Wells family pressure, no three-year contract. Just you and Derek, choosing each other.”
The truth of her words washed over me like a warm tide. Choice. That was what made today different. Not duty or family obligation or Margaret Wells’ final wish. Just Derek and me, choosing each other with clear eyes and full hearts.
I turned to face her, taking her hands in mine. “Thank you. For everything. For being here through all of it.” The words felt inadequate for the woman who had been my lighthouse through the darkest storms of my marriage.
Where else would I be?” Olivia squeezed my hands, then released them to adjust a strand of my hair. “There. Ready to make Derek’s jaw hit the floor?”
