By the time I woke up, evening had fallen. I shifted my arm slightly and immediately saw Leon resting his head on the table beside my bed.
Next to him was an elegant, untouched takeout box.
A wave of profound guilt washed over me.
Just then, my phone buzzed on the nightstand. I reached for it quickly, but the movement startled Leon awake.
He rubbed his sleepy eyes and mumbled, "Is that bag empty already?"
His disheveled, groggy appearance made me smile. I held up my phone and teased, "Were you having a good dream, Dr. Lennox?"
Leon blinked a few times, nodding before quickly shaking his head, completely frustrated with himself. "Look at me, I can't believe I fell asleep on watch."
I was just about to thank him when Zoey's voice abruptly echoed through the room: "Are you feeling any better, Selena?"
Leon and I looked toward the door at the exact same time, finding Ferris and Zoey standing in the entryway.
The four of us stared at each other in thick, heavy silence. After a few agonizing seconds, Zoey added, "By the way, everyone is having hotpot in the restaurant downstairs tonight. Dr. Logan sent me to ask if you'd be joining us."
So she had just been sent to play messenger.
I glanced down at my vibrating phone—the caller ID read Dr. Logan.
I assumed it was about the exact same thing.
"Selena just finished her IV, and her ankle is still massively swollen. She obviously can't attend the dinner tonight," Leon drawled smoothly, shutting the request down on my behalf. "I'm sure Dr. Logan will understand."
The young woman cast a timid, nervous glance in my direction. "That's what I told Dr. Logan too, but he insisted I come and ask anyway."
"Thank you, Zoey. I'll call him back right now."
