The Cold Surgeon's Contract Bride novel Chapter 156

Real estate investment.

His blatant excuse made my blood boil. I had absolutely no hard evidence proving an affair between him and Zoey. If the deed to that apartment had his name on it, then legally—and in the eyes of his parents—I had zero leverage.

The realization hit me like a physical blow. All the fight drained out of me. As my hand absentmindedly brushed against the wine rack, my fingers slipped. A heavy bottle of red wine plummeted from the top shelf, dropping toward my head like a bomb.

"Watch out!"

A sharp yell snapped me back to reality. Before I could even register the danger, Ferris yanked me backward like a ragdoll. A split second later, a deafening crash echoed through the room as freezing liquid exploded in front of my face.

"Oh my god! What happened?!"

Lucille rushed over, her face pale with panic. She stared in horror at the shattered glass between us. "My son-in-law is bleeding!"

I finally snapped out of my daze. I looked up and saw that Ferris's shoulder was completely soaked in dark red.

The bottle hadn't hit the floor first. It had smashed directly against his shoulder.

Five minutes later, Ferris was sitting in a beanbag chair in the living room, dressed in loose loungewear. The left side of his shirt was pulled down, exposing the injury. The bruised, violently scraped skin was jarring against his pale complexion. With his shirt half-open and his face entirely devoid of color, he looked strangely, beautifully fragile.

"Gentler," he snapped, his voice rough with irritation. "You spent a month in the Department of Anesthesiology, and now you don't even know basic wound care?"

His mockery grated on my nerves, and my instinct was to snap back. But remembering that he had literally taken a bottle of wine to the shoulder to protect me, I gritted my teeth and swallowed my pride.

The lacerations weren't deep, but removing the glass shards took agonizing precision. By the time I finally finished bandaging him up, Lucille had already set dinner on the table.
