"There are two patients waiting after you," Ferris said, his expression completely unyielding. "Please proceed with the tests exactly as I've instructed."
Silas's face darkened instantly. He was about to snap back, but Lucille quickly intervened. "The doctor is right. Let's just go get the scan done first."
Lucille practically shoved Silas out of the clinic.
Right up until he went into the CT room, Silas was still complaining about Ferris. "Doctors these days have the skills but zero bedside manner! He lacks basic human decency!"
Lucille, meanwhile, pulled me aside to vent. "I thought marrying you into the Sterling family meant we'd get some perks. But look at this! His own mother-in-law walks into his clinic, and he treats us like ghosts. Thank God your uncle doesn't know you're married to him. If he knew your in-laws treated us this poorly, I'd die of embarrassment."
I felt a bitter twist in my chest, but part of me was secretly relieved. Thank God Zoey wasn't shadowing Ferris today. With Lucille's radar, she would have instantly picked up on the weird dynamic between them.
By the time the CT scan was finished, it was already early afternoon. The technician informed us the results wouldn't be ready for at least three or four hours. I told Lucille to take Silas home to rest while I waited at the hospital.
I waited right up until the end of the shift.
Realizing the clinic was closed for the day, I had no choice but to take the printed scans and head back to the apartment.
Which meant Silas still didn't have a diagnosis.
I checked the Neurosurgery schedule for tomorrow. Ferris wasn't on it.
I called Lucille to break the news. Over the phone, she immediately offered a solution. "Well, isn't that simple? Just wait for your husband to come home, hand him the scans, and ask him directly. You're telling me you can't get an answer out of him?"
