My worst nightmare had just materialized.
Seeing Ferris and Zoey standing side-by-side, my heart instantly hammered in my throat.
I specifically checked the schedule this morning—Ferris wasn't supposed to be doing consults today.
Running into him was bad enough, but having Zoey there made it a disaster.
I had no idea if Ferris had heard Silas's embarrassing matchmaking speech, but what truly terrified me was the possibility of Lucille connecting the dots.
Right on cue, Lucille gasped in delight. "Oh! It's the sweet girl we bumped into earlier!"
Zoey didn't miss a beat. She smiled warmly. "Yes, ma'am. I'm Zoey Zeller. Selena was a few years ahead of me in med school, and now I'm interning here in Neurosurgery."
Lucille's smile was genuine through the first half of the introduction, but the moment Zoey mentioned her department, Lucille's sharp eyes dropped to the girl's ID badge. She studied it for a second. "Oh, you went to the same med school? And you're interning in Neurosurgery? You must be incredibly smart."
As she spoke, her gaze flicked subtly toward Ferris, probing for a reaction. But Ferris stood there looking like an immovable statue of righteousness, completely ignoring Lucille's silent interrogation.
His professional mask was so flawless that it actually extinguished the lingering suspicion in Lucille's eyes.
Zoey, playing the perfect angel, chimed in, "You flatter me, ma'am. Selena is always so busy, so if you ever need any help around here, please don't hesitate to ask me."
Lucille shot me a meaningful look. "Look at her. So sweet and polite."
Silas, who had been brooding silently, suddenly saw an opening. "Speaking of needing help, young lady, I actually do have a favor to ask."
