Riley scrubbed her cheek until it was raw and red, screaming back, "Get out! I don't want to see you!"
"...I'm sorry, I..." After a long silence, Pierce finally added, "Get some sleep."
Riley heard his footsteps retreating, followed by the sound of the door opening and closing.
He was gone?
Riley stayed in the bathroom for quite a while. Once she was certain there were no sounds outside, she unlocked the door, peeked out, and scanned the room. Pierce was nowhere to be seen. Only then did she step out.
She quickly walked over to the front door, locked it, and finally let out a sigh of relief.
Crawling back into bed, a barrage of memories flashed through her mind.
When she and Pierce were dating, when they got married, her pregnancy, the birth, his affair, the divorce papers...
They had gone from deeply in love to completely estranged. In just three short years, a beautiful romance had devolved into a shattered marriage.
Time truly was the ultimate test of character.
Riley didn't know when she finally drifted off, but when she woke up, the sun was already shining. After washing up and heading downstairs, she found Pierce sitting rigidly on the living room sofa, still wearing his clothes from the night before.
Seeing her come down, he locked his gaze onto her.
She completely ignored him, intending to go outside for some fresh morning air.
Pierce stood up and grabbed her arm. "Riley, I'm sorry. I drank too much last night."
Riley lowered her eyes, her gaze landing squarely on his hand gripping her wrist. "Let go."
