Anxiety gnawed at Riley, completely ruining her appetite. She called a few times and sent several texts, but Pierce neither answered nor replied.

It wasn't until 10 PM that Pierce finally called her back. “Riley, I'm so sorry. There was an absolute emergency at the Havenbury branch. I was on a flight, so I couldn't answer or text you back.”

“You went to Havenbury?”

“Yeah, the situation is extremely complicated. I might have to stay here for a week.”

Riley felt an instant wave of disappointment. He had promised to stay by her side until she gave birth, but after only one day, he was gone on a business trip.

“Riley, are you upset?”

Even if she was, what could she do?

He was already gone.

Riley sighed inwardly, suppressing her emotions. “No, it was an emergency, you had no choice. But you left so quickly you didn't pack a single thing. Will you be okay?”

“I can buy whatever I need here. Don't worry about me. Just take good care of yourself and the baby. Make sure you're eating and sleeping on time. Once I handle this, I swear I'll be there waiting for the baby with you.”

Earlier, Riley had been too worried about Pierce to eat. Now, even though she felt down, she forced herself to have the nanny reheat the food, managing to eat a little for the baby's sake.

The next day, a colleague from the hospital called. “Dr. Vance, can I ask a huge favor?”
