“I came to visit a client.”

As they spoke, the elevator doors opened.-

Pierce guided Riley inside. “Which floor is Quinn on?”

“The twelfth,” Riley replied.

Pierce pressed twelve, then pressed nine.

Riley glanced at the floor directory by the buttons. The ninth floor was the neonatal department. She looked at him in confusion. “Why are you going to the neonatal ward?”

Pierce lifted the bag in his hand. “A client's wife just gave birth. He asked me to pick up some baby supplies for him.”

Riley recognized the logo on the bag. It was a famous maternity brand. Since she was close to her due date, she had done plenty of research on these things.

“Do you want to come with me to see?” Pierce asked thoughtfully.

Riley was genuinely tempted. She currently had zero resistance to newborns, but... “No, I'm worried about Quinn. Plus, it might be awkward for me to intrude on your client.”

The elevator reached the ninth floor.

Pierce didn't rush out. He held the 'open door' button and looked at Riley. “Should I take you home afterward?”

“Are you done with the company emergency?”

“I'll take you home first, then head back to the office.”

“Don't run back and forth. Just go handle your business after you see your client. Don't worry about me. Mr. Carter is waiting for me.”

“Alright, whatever you say.” Pierce stepped out of the elevator. He watched the doors close and the numbers go up before turning to walk down the hall.

When Riley reached the hospital room and spoke with Quinn, she realized the accident happened right while they were on the phone earlier.

Distracted, Quinn had crashed into a guardrail.

“No wonder the call dropped. I thought you just got busy.” Riley was filled with guilt. “If I knew you were driving, I would've...”
