Riley reached the door of the VIP lounge and pushed. It was locked from the inside. Through the heavy wood, she could faintly hear a woman's stifled, desperate sobbing.
"So hot... don't bite... it hurts..."
The muffled, agonizingly suggestive words bled through the door.
Riley raised a trembling fist and knocked. Instantly, a furious, irritated voice barked from inside. "Get out!"
That voice...
It sounded exactly like Pierce.
Her heart slammed against her ribs, her mind short-circuiting into total, blinding white noise. She stood paralyzed in the hallway, her knuckles still suspended in the air.
It couldn't be. Tonight was the banquet for their daughter. There was absolutely no way Pierce would be hooking up with someone at an event like this.
No—regardless of the event, Pierce would never betray her like this.
She must have misheard. The man inside could not be Pierce.
With trembling hands, Riley unclasped her evening clutch, pulled out her phone, and dialed his number. Seconds later, a painfully familiar ringtone echoed from the other side of the door.
She stared at the polished wood in sheer horror. He really was in there!
The phone kept ringing, but no one answered.
The melody crashed over her like violent waves, shattering her chest with every beat.
Her face drained of all color. She slammed both fists against the door. Before she could strike it a third time, the lock clicked, and the door swung open. A disheveled, chaotic Pierce appeared in the frame.
His normally pristine white dress shirt was a disaster. It was half-untucked from his slacks, and the top three buttons had been violently torn open, exposing his collarbones.
Riley's gaze shot past him. Inside, Seraphina was sprawled against the sofa cushions, her face flushed a feverish, unnatural red. The strap of her yellow evening gown had slipped completely off her shoulder, leaving her dangerously exposed. But it was the blood that made Riley's stomach churn—it was smeared across her lips, her hands, and the fabric of her dress. The sight was sickeningly intimate.
Seraphina's eyes were glossy, wet with tears, framing her in a twisted portrait of vulnerability and pure seduction.
Even a complete idiot could piece together what had just happened in this room.
